Chapter 6 - The Return to Manhattan

Teterboro Airport was shrouded in a heavy gray freezing rain when the Gulfstream touched down at six in the morning.

Four black armored SUVs were waiting directly on the tarmac. As soon as the jet stairwell dropped, Marcus’s security team formed a perimeter, shielding the children from the freezing wind with broad black umbrellas as we transferred them directly into the heated interiors of the vehicles.

My Manhattan penthouse—a three-story glass structure sitting atop a tower overlooking Central Park—had been Claire’s favorite place. It was secure, equipped with private medical facilities, private security elevators, and an entire staff that had been hired by Claire herself before her death.

When we stepped through the private elevator doors on the seventy-second floor, the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable—a warm, grandmotherly woman who had worked for the Hartwell family for twenty years—was standing in the foyer with tears streaming down her face.

“Mr. Caldwell!” Mrs. Gable cried, rushing forward and instantly dropping to her knees beside the girls as Marcus carried them inside. “Oh, my sweet babies... look at what’s happened to you!”

“Mrs. Gable,” I said gently, helping Emma out of her heavy winter coat. “They are safe now. The lower floors are locked. Nobody enters this penthouse without my direct voice clearance.”

“The kitchen is stocked with everything Dr. Evelyn requested, sir,” Mrs. Gable said, wiping her eyes with her apron, her face hardening into an expression of fierce, protective rage. “And those... those monsters? Where are they?”

“In the holding facility below Caldwell Tower,” I replied coldly. “Being interviewed by the Federal District Attorney.”

I turned to Marcus, who was standing by the private elevator control panel.

“What is the status of the board meeting?” I asked.

Marcus checked his secure tablet. “The board of directors convened an emergency session at 9:00 AM at the corporate headquarters. They believe you are currently stranded in Aspen due to the winter storm. Vanguard Global’s representatives have already taken their seats in the grand boardroom.”

“And the Shareholders Gala tonight?”

“Still scheduled for 7:00 PM at the Plaza Hotel,” Marcus answered. “Over five hundred guests, media outlets, and financial investors are attending. Vanguard’s interim chairman, Richard Sterling, plans to publicly announce the voluntary merger of Caldwell Systems with Vanguard Global during the opening keynote speech.”

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the dark gray skyline of Manhattan. Rain streamed down the glass like tears.

“Richard Sterling,” I mused softly. “The man who bought three of my board members last month.”

“He believes he holds the proxy votes for your daughters’ trust, Mr. Caldwell,” Marcus added. “Vance’s forged signature documents were uploaded to the corporate registry three hours ago.”

I turned back to look at my daughters. They were sitting on the long velvet sofa in the grand living room, surrounded by Mrs. Gable’s warm pastries, warm milk, and fresh fruit. Sophie was giggling softly as Lily tried to feed a piece of strawberry to a large plush teddy bear Claire had bought them years ago.

For the first time in six months, I saw a real, genuine spark of childhood return to their eyes.

I walked over, knelt beside the sofa, and kissed each of them on the forehead.

“Daddy has to go to work for a few hours,” I told them gently.

Emma looked up, her gray eyes clear and focused. “Will you come back for dinner, Daddy?”

“I will always come back for dinner,” I swore to her, holding her chin gently. “And tonight, we’re having hot chocolate, sugar cookies, and opening every single Christmas gift in the world.”

“Promise?” Grace whispered.

“I promise.”

I stood up, buttoned my charcoal tailored jacket, and turned to Marcus.

“Get the car, Marcus,” I said. “It’s time to go to the board meeting.”
