Chapter 10 - The Harmony of the Castle

The kitchen of the Sterling Street house was filled with the beautiful, chaotic music of a Sunday morning in July. The windows were wide open to the summer breeze, the curtains fluttering softly against the white frames, the scent of fresh pancakes and maple syrup rich in the air.

Matteo stood at the stove, a white apron tied over his trousers, a spatula in his hand as he flipped a perfectly golden pancake onto a ceramic plate. He looked completely out of place among the flour dust and the bright yellow dishtowels, yet he moved with a quiet, unshakeable grace that made the entire house feel safe.

Emma sat at the kitchen table, her green plastic castle now surrounded by real flowers she had gathered from the front garden, her cracked smartphone sitting on the wood near her juice glass—no longer used for emergencies, but kept as a keepsake of the night the world changed.

Sarah walked into the room, wearing a soft summer dress, her hands reaching around Matteo’s waist from behind, her head resting against his back as he stacked the final pancake.

"The history project got an A, Matt," Emma announced happily, waving a report card with a bright gold star affixed to the corner. "The teacher said my description of the defensive line was the best she’d ever read."

Matteo laughed—a low, deep sound of pure, unadulterated joy that filled every corner of the warm kitchen. He turned around, lifting the little girl up into his large arms, holding her close against his chest while Sarah rested her head against his shoulder.

"The defensive line is always iron when the Red Knight is home, Emma," Matteo said, his voice a perfect harmony of strength and devotion.

He looked out the open kitchen window. The city of Boston was still there, a sprawling monument to concrete and empires, full of dark streets and ancient debts. But inside the walls of the house on Sterling Street, beneath the gentle warmth of a summer sun, the boy named Michael Rodriguez had finally found the one thing the Don could never build—a home, a future, and a love that was entirely, beautifully safe.
