Chapter 4 - Blood on the Mahogany

Before Victor or Marco could clear their holsters, the double doors at the far end of the dining hall slammed open with a deafening crash.

A barrage of suppressed gunfire shattered the quiet night.

Victor’s head snapped back as two rounds tore through his chest, dropping him instantly onto the Persian rug. Marco screamed as a heavy bullet shattered his knee, dropping him to his hands and knees before another round put him down permanently. Slick Jimmy dropped his weapon immediately, throwing his hands in the air and falling to his knees, trembling violently.

Standing in the doorway were ten men clad in black tactical gear—not estate guards, but my private, elite strike team led by Dominic, a man whose life I had saved in Colombia ten years ago and whose loyalty belonged solely to me.

The five neutral capos scrambled away from the table, ducking behind leather armchairs, their hands displayed open and empty.

Lorenzo stood alone at the head of the table. His scotch glass had been knocked over, spilling golden liquid across the polished wood. His tailored suit was speckled with Victor’s blood.

His face was dead white. The smug, manipulative patriarch was gone, replaced by a terrified rat trapped in a corner.

"Gabriel..." Lorenzo gasped, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "Gabriel, wait! Think about what you're doing! I built this empire with your father! I made you who you are!"

I walked around the long mahogany table, my heavy leather boots stepping over the bodies of Victor and Marco. I didn't draw my gun. I didn't need it.

"You didn't make me, Lorenzo," I said, stopping three feet away from him. "You used me. You took a grieving twenty-two-year-old kid and turned him into a butcher so you could buy condos in Miami and hide your offshore accounts in Zurich."

"I protected you!" Lorenzo shrieked, backing against the fireplace mantle. "The Morettis would have wiped out the Vance family if I hadn't taken control! Silas was weak! He was going to ruin everything!"

"Silas was a man of honor!" a raspy, terrible voice echoed from the doorway.

Lorenzo froze. His eyes bulged out of his head as if he were looking into the gaping maw of Hell itself.

Silas walked into the room.

He was supported on one side by Beatrice, but he walked erect, his head held high. He wore one of my sharp charcoal suits, slightly oversized on his thin frame, but his presence dominated the entire chamber. The silver scar on his neck gleamed under the chandelier light like a medal of survival.

The five capos cowering behind the furniture gasped in absolute terror.

"S-Silas...?" Frankie from Cicero stammered, falling to his knees and crossing himself. "Holy Mother of God... he’s alive..."

Lorenzo collapsed onto his knees, his hands trembling violently as he stared at the man he had ordered thrown into the frozen depths of Navy Pier twelve years ago.

"No..." Lorenzo whimpered, his voice shrinking into a pathetic squeak. "No... you're dead... I watched you burn... I saw the report..."

"You saw what your money bought you, Lorenzo," Silas said, stepping right up to the kneeling man. "You thought cold water and a bullet to the throat would silence me. But God wasn't finished with me yet."

Lorenzo looked up at Silas, then turned his eyes to me, desperate tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks.

"Gabriel! Please!" Lorenzo begged, reaching out to grab the hem of my trousers. "I was like a father to you! Don't do this! Spare me! I'll give you the Swiss account numbers! I'll give you everything! Millions! Tens of millions!"

I looked down at the man who had lied to me every single day of my adult life. The man who had sat at my Christmas table, who had toasted my father’s memory, who had held my hand when I wept for my dead brother.

I didn't feel anger anymore. I felt an overwhelming, profound disgust.

"Dominic," I called out cold.

Dominic stepped forward. "Yes, Boss?"

"Take Lorenzo to the basement," I instructed calmly. "The same basement behind the meatpacking plant where my brother was forced to live like an animal for twelve years. Strip him of his suit. Give him a bucket of coal and an army cot."

Lorenzo screamed, clawing at the floorboards as Dominic’s tactical guards grabbed him under the shoulders and dragged him backward toward the exit.

"No! Gabriel! Kill me! Just put a bullet in my head! Don't leave me down there! Gabriel!" Lorenzo’s shrieks faded down the long marble corridor until the heavy oak doors clicked shut, plunging the dining hall back into silence.

I turned to the five remaining capos who were still cowering on the floor.

"Get up," I ordered.

They scrambled to their feet, lining up like terrified schoolboys, their heads bowed in total submission.

"Starting tonight," I announced, laying my hand on Silas's shoulder, "the Vance Syndicate is changing. My brother, Silas Vance, has returned to take his rightful place as Chairman of the Board. Every illegal pipeline Lorenzo operated will be dismantled. Every corrupt book will be audited. If any of you have a problem with that... you can join Lorenzo in the basement."

Frankie from Cicero stepped forward immediately, placing his hand over his heart and bowing deeply toward Silas.

"Welcome home, Boss," Frankie declared, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "Long live the Vances."

The other four capos quickly echoed the pledge, bowing to the ghost who had returned to save us all.
