Chapter 7 - Ambush at Thirty Thousand Feet

The Moretti family’s private Gulfstream jet cut smoothly through the clear blue sky, flying at thirty thousand feet above the snow-covered plains of the Midwest.
Inside the luxurious cabin, the mood was quiet. Emma had fallen asleep in a wide leather armchair, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, with Bruno resting his massive head directly across her knees. Sophia sat across from Aleandro, reviewing a set of legal financial documents he had provided.
“Julian didn't steal six million dollars,” Sophia said, her eyes widening as she read through the bank ledgers. “These are offshore accounts belonging to Don Valenti himself!”
“Exactly,” Aleandro said, sipping his tea. “Julian was Valenti’s chief accountant. He discovered that Valenti was skimming millions from his own captains’ pension funds and laundering it through fake construction firms. Julian didn't take the money—he froze the accounts so Valenti couldn't pocket it. That’s why Valenti had him killed. He needed the encryption keys that Julian possessed.”
Sophia gasped. “The encryption keys... Julian gave me a silver locket before he died. He told me never to open it until Emma was eighteen.”
“The keys are inside that locket,” Aleandro concluded. “Valenti doesn't want revenge, Sophia. He wants that locket so he can unlock forty million dollars before his own captains find out he’s been robbing them blind.”
Suddenly, the airplane lurched violently.
The cabin lights flickered and died, replaced instantly by the harsh red glow of emergency strip lighting. The engines let out a terrifying, sputtering whine, and the plane entered a steep, sickening bank to the left.
From the cockpit, the alarm bells began to blare continuously.
Marco burst through the cockpit door, his face pale, his gun drawn. “Aleandro! We’ve got a problem! The co-pilot just shot the captain!”
Before Marco could finish his sentence, the co-pilot stepped out from behind the cockpit bulkhead, holding a silenced pistol. He had a bloody bruise on his forehead where Marco had struck him.
“Nobody move!” the co-pilot screamed, his eyes wild with greed. “Valenti paid me ten million dollars for this locket! Hand it over, Moretti, or I’ll depressurize the cabin and send this plane into the ground at five hundred miles an hour!”
Sophia screamed, throwing herself over Emma.
Emma woke up instantly, crying out in terror as the plane shook violently again.
Bruno’s response was instantaneous.
The massive dog didn't wait for a command. Hearing Emma’s cry, his instinct exploded into pure lethality. Bruno launched himself across the narrow cabin aisle like a black missile.
The co-pilot fired a panic shot—the bullet grazing Bruno’s flank—but the massive dog’s weight hit the traitor square in the chest. They both slammed back into the cockpit door with terrifying force.
The co-pilot’s gun flew from his hand, skittering across the carpet. Bruno’s jaws clamped around the man’s forearm, pinning him to the floor while Marco lunged forward, securing the rogue pilot in a chokehold until he went limp.
“Aleandro!” Marco yelled over the roaring wind of the cabin. “The captain is dead! The autopilot is disengaged! We’re falling!”
Aleandro didn't panic. He stepped over the unconscious traitor, took the pilot’s seat, and grabbed the control yoke, pulling back with all his physical strength while adjusting the engine thud levers.
Having served four years as an air corps pilot in his youth before taking over the family business, Aleandro felt the controls respond. Slowly, painfully, the Gulfstream’s nose pulled up, leveling out at fifteen thousand feet just above the clouds.
In the cabin, Sophia was holding Emma tightly, tears streaming down her face.
Bruno trotted over, bleeding slightly from the graze on his side, and placed his heavy head gently onto Sophia’s shoulder, whining soft, reassuring whines.
Aleandro turned from the cockpit console, looking back into the cabin at the woman, the child, and the dog who had survived the impossible.
“Marco,” Aleandro called out, his voice deathly calm. “Change our flight plan. We aren't going to Atlantic City anymore.”

“Where are we going, boss?” Marco asked, wiping sweat from his forehead.
“New York,” Aleandro replied, his eyes blazing with absolute fury. “We’re taking the fight directly to Don Valenti’s doorstep.”
