Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Within two hours, Lucía’s life began to warp at a frightening speed.
She was not allowed to return to the hotel floor. Instead, a female assistant sent by Tariq arrived at the suite carrying three garment bags filled with tailored silk dresses and leather shoes. Lucía refused the silk, choosing instead a simple, elegant dark green dress that covered her shoulders and fell past her knees.
Downstairs, news of the incident had exploded into chaos.
Mr. Valdés was frantically pacing the main lobby, trying to figure out why the foreign billionaire had commandeered a member of his cleaning staff. Meanwhile, in an executive office on the top floor of a nearby skyscraper, a man named Roberto Sterling was receiving a phone call that made him spill his espresso across a pile of blueprints.
Sterling was the primary Mexican partner in the Reforma infrastructure deal—a ruthless, smooth-talking developer who had spent five years quietly clearing the legal hurdles to break ground on a massive commercial complex.
“What do you mean Tariq found an heir?” Sterling roared into his phone, standing up and looking out over Paseo de la Reforma. “The Al-Hassan trust was dead! We paid two judges in Cairo to certify the abandonment of the title three years ago!”
“The woman is standing in Tariq’s suite right now, Roberto,” his informant inside the hotel whispered frantically over the line. “She’s one of the hotel maids. She has the original silver seal. Tariq’s lawyers are already drafting a formal verification notice to the international court of arbitration.”
Sterling’s face turned gray, then contorted into an ugly, murderous grimace. “A maid? An invisible nobody from Iztacalco is going to freeze a four-hundred-million-dollar buyout?”
“If her claim is validated, she owns the ground rights under Sector 4,” the informant warned. “Your construction permits become illegal overnight.”
Sterling slammed his hand onto his desk, shattering the glass top. “Find out everything about her. Where she lives, who her family is, what she cares about. Nobody stops this deal. Nobody.”
Back in the hotel suite, Lucía stood near the window, holding her phone to her ear.
“Mom?” Daniel’s voice came through the speaker, accompanied by the background noise of his middle school cafeteria. “Are you okay? You sound weird. Did you fix my zipper?”
Tears welled in Lucía’s eyes, but she forced her voice to remain steady. “I’m okay, my love. Listen to me very carefully, Daniel. Who is with you right now?”
“Just Leo and Hector. We’re eating lunch. Why?”
“I am sending a car to pick you up from school early today,” Lucía said, looking at Rashid, who was gesturing that a private security detail was already en route to Iztacalco. “I want you to go with the man named Gabriel. Do not go back to the apartment. Do you understand me, Daniel?”

“Mom, what’s going on? Did something happen at the hotel? Are you in trouble?”
“No, sweetie,” Lucía whispered, looking at her reflection in the glass—no longer wearing her apron, but still feeling the phantom weight of her cleaning cart. “Trouble just found out who we really are. Just trust me. I’ll see you in an hour.”
