Chapter 10 - The Road Home

The sun was setting low over the highway, painting the Ohio sky in brilliant streaks of amber, gold, and deep violet.
Daniel drove his sedan north along I-75, his radio playing softly, a warm breeze blowing through the open windows.
In the passenger seat sat Elena, her hand resting comfortably over his on the center console. In the back seat, eight-year-old Lily and two-year-old Maya were fast asleep, holding hands across their car seats, exhausted from the celebration at the sanctuary.
Daniel glanced in his rearview mirror at the sleeping girls, then out at the stretch of highway near mile marker 53.
The dark, lonely stretch of road where he had stopped his car two years ago was still there, but it no longer felt cold or terrifying. The memory of the gravel, the wind, and the red tail lights had been transformed into the foundation of a new life—a life filled with purpose, family, and an unshakeable love.
“What are you thinking about?” Elena asked softly, turning her head to look at him with a gentle smile.
Daniel smiled back, his eyes full of warmth as he squeezed her hand.
“I was thinking about how small decisions change everything,” Daniel said quietly, watching the gold light of the sunset reflect off the highway ahead. “Fourteen minutes. A cold cup of coffee. A decision to stop instead of driving past.”
“It wasn't a decision, Daniel,” Elena said softly, leaning over to rest her head against his shoulder. “It was a miracle.”
Daniel looked out at the long road stretching toward the horizon, feeling the steady, rhythmic heartbeat of the life he had fought to rebuild.
The dark was gone.
