Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

By 3:00 AM, the penthouse felt like a command center in a war zone.
Marcus sat at the dining room table surrounded by three open laptops, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboards with terrifying speed. Ethan stood behind him, watching the lines of code stream down the monitors, while Clara sat on the sofa nearby, keeping watch over the sleeping children.
"Got ’em," Marcus hissed suddenly, slamming his palm on the desk.
A red dot blinked furiously on a digital map of downtown Chicago, pinpointing a high-rise loft building in the industrial West Loop district—less than two miles away from the penthouse.
"They opened the file," Marcus grinned triumphantly. "The spyware beacon transmitted their exact IP address and physical location. It’s a loft owned by Veritas Capital Partners."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits. Veritas Capital. A predatory hedge fund known for shorting tech stocks and engineering hostile takeovers. Their managing director, Julian Vance, had been trying to acquire a controlling stake in Apex Technologies for over a year—and Ethan had rebuffed every single overture.
"Vance," Ethan growled. "It wasn't just a random tabloid extortionist. It was a corporate hit job."
"They wanted to destroy your reputation, force your resignation, and buy up your distressed shares at a discount when the stock crashed," Marcus analyzed, his voice laced with professional venom. "Cold-blooded bastards."
"Get the private security team on the phone," Ethan ordered, buttoning up his suit jacket. "Tell them to mobilize three tactical units. We’re going to the West Loop."
"Ethan, wait!" Clara stood up quickly, walking over to him. "You can't just storm a corporate facility with private guards. That’s illegal! You’ll end up in prison!"
"I'm not storming it, Clara. I'm inviting the police along for the ride," Ethan replied, pulling his phone out. He dialed the direct cell number of the Chicago Police Department’s Deputy Chief of Detectives, an old college acquaintance. "Chief Miller? Yeah, it’s Ethan Wallace. I have concrete evidence of an active corporate extortion scheme and cyber-blackmail originating from a Veritas Capital property in the West Loop. I’m sending you the MAC address, IP logs, and financial routing records right now. Meet me there in fifteen minutes."
He hung up, looking down at Clara with a firm, reassurring expression.
"Stay here with the kids. Lock the smart doors. Dr. Hayes is on call downstairs, and my personal security detail is stationed outside this door. I’ll be back before dawn."
Clara searched his face for a long moment, then reached out and straightened his tie—a small, intimate gesture that spoke volumes.
"Be careful, Ethan," she whispered. "My children just found their father. I’m not letting them lose him again."
Fourteen minutes later, Ethan’s Tesla pulled up to the abandoned industrial loft in the West Loop, sliding silently onto the wet asphalt behind two unmarked Chicago Police cruisers.
Before the officers could even draw their weapons, Ethan strode up to the rusted metal side door, flanked by his head of security and two tactical officers.
"Break it," Ethan commanded.
The heavy steel door buckled under a hydraulic battering ram with a deafening crash, swinging wide open into a dimly lit, high-ceilinged loft filled with computer servers, multiple monitors, and empty pizza boxes.
Sitting at the center desk, wearing a bespoke gray suit and staring in absolute horror at a laptop screen that was currently displaying a police lockout warning, was Julian Vance himself.
Julian scrambled backward out of his chair, knocking it over onto the concrete floor. "What is the meaning of this? You can't be here! This is private property!"
"It's a crime scene, Julian," Ethan said coldly, walking slowly toward him as the police officers swarmed the room, clicking handcuffs onto the hedge fund manager's wrists.
On the main monitor, the blackmail email draft addressed to various media outlets was still open, alongside bank routing numbers connected to Veritas Capital accounts.
"You’re finished, Julian," Ethan said, standing over him. "Between the wire fraud, the extortion charges, and the corporate espionage logs Marcus is already forwarding to the SEC, you’ll be spending the next twenty years behind bars."
Julian sneered, his face turning purple with rage as the cold steel cuffs locked around his wrists. "You think you won, Wallace? Your life is still a public relations disaster! The moment the tabloids find out about your beggar ex and your illegitimate brats—"
Ethan didn't wait for him to finish. He threw a single, lightning-fast right hook that caught Julian flush on the jaw, sending the corporate raider crashing backward into a rack of server cables.
"Keep my family out of your mouth," Ethan hissed, shaking his bruised knuckles.

A police officer grabbed Julian by the collar, hoisting him up. "Let's go, pal. You're making bail in hell."
As the police led Julian away in handcuffs, Ethan stood in the center of the dark loft, taking a deep breath of the cold Chicago air. The first major battle was won. But the real war—healing the damage he had caused to the woman he loved—was only just beginning.
