Chapter 3 - The Millionaire’s Return

What Brenda did not know—what no one in the McGregor estate knew—was that the private jet carrying Alistair McGregor had landed at Columbus International Airport three hours ahead of schedule.

Alistair had cut his executive summit in Chicago short. For six years, he had thrown himself into work, running a multi-billion-dollar energy conglomerate to escape the crushing grief of losing his wife, Eleanor, during Finley’s birth. Every time he looked at his son, he saw Eleanor’s eyes, and every time he saw the boy’s motionless legs, the guilt ate a piece of his soul. He believed his presence brought bad luck. He believed he was protecting Finley by leaving him in the care of professionals.

But tonight, sitting in his hotel room in Chicago, a sudden, overwhelming wave of loneliness had hit him. He wanted to see his son.

The heavy front doors of the estate swung open softly. Alistair walked into the marble foyer, pulling off his leather gloves. He was a tall, imposing man of thirty-eight, with dark hair silvering at the temples, sharp jawline, and eyes that rarely showed emotion.

He heard voices echoing from the second-floor balcony—sharp, hostile, and hushed.

Alistair frowned. He walked silently up the grand staircase, his heavy boots making no sound on the thick Persian runner.

As he reached the nursery corridor, he saw two estate security guards standing outside the door, looking uncomfortable.

“What is going on here?” Alistair’s voice cut through the quiet hallway like a thunderclap.

The guards whipped around, going rigid. “Mr. McGregor! We... we didn't expect you until Sunday, sir.”

Alistair didn't wait for an answer. He pushed past them and shoved the nursery door open.

The scene inside froze his blood.

Brenda was standing near the bed, shouting into her phone, while a young woman in a modest nanny uniform stood fiercely in front of Finley’s bed, her arms outstretched like a shield.

“Alistair!” Brenda gasped, dropping her phone. Her voice instantly shifted into a high-pitched, panicked flutter. “Thank God you’re back early! It’s... it’s an absolute disaster! This new girl—this Sarah—she’s out of her mind! I caught her physically abusing Finley!”

Alistair’s dark eyes flashed with dangerous fire. He looked at Sarah. “Abusing him?”

Sarah didn't flinch. She stood tall, though her hands were shaking. “I have never touched this boy with anything other than love and care, Mr. McGregor. Ask your head housekeeper. Ask the kitchen staff. Ask Finley.”

“She’s lying!” Brenda interjected hysterically, stepping toward Alistair. “She forced him out of his chair! She made him stand on his ruined legs! Look at him—he’s exhausted, pale, drenched in sweat! She could have caused permanent spinal damage!”

Alistair looked past both women to the bed. His heart clenched. Finley was lying on his side, his small face flushed, breathing heavily in his sleep. Besided the bed leaned two small, lightweight aluminum crutches that Alistair had never seen before in his life.

“Where did those crutches come from?” Alistair asked, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register.

“She smuggled them onto the property!” Brenda spat. “She’s been secretly torturing him in the garden while I was running errands!”

Alistair walked slowly into the room. The air felt heavy, suffocating. He stopped in front of Sarah. He was a foot taller than her, casting a broad shadow over her small frame.

“Did you make my son stand?” Alistair asked, his tone devoid of warmth.

“Yes,” Sarah said, staring straight into the eyes of the billionaire who had abandoned his child to mercenaries. “I did.”
