Chapter 8 - The Public Unmasking

On Sunday evening at 7:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was packed with over two hundred journalists, news camera crews, corporate analysts, and legal observers.
Julian Vance sat in his VIP suite on the top floor of his corporate tower across town, watching the live television feed with a glass of champagne in his hand, confident that Russell Morrison was about to announce his resignation from Morrison Development under corporate pressure.
The ballroom podium stood beneath bright studio lights.
Russell Morrison stepped onto the stage. He wore a crisp dark suit, walking with absolute confidence and power, completely free of the frailty he had shown weeks earlier.
The flashes of a hundred cameras lit up the room like lightning.
"Good evening," Russell began, his deep voice carrying clearly through the microphones to millions of viewers watching live across the country. "Over the past forty-eight hours, there has been extensive media speculation regarding the legal custody of my adopted daughter, Sylvie, and her brother, Thomas."
The room went dead silent.
"Certain individuals in this city," Russell continued, his eyes fixing directly on the main camera lens as if looking through it into Julian Vance’s soul, "have attempted to manipulate our legal system, using a grieving orphan child as a pawn to launch a corporate takeover of my firm."
Reporters gasped, instantly typing on their laptops.
"They hired a corrupt former landlord, Carl Baxter, who illegally evicted a dead nurse’s children into a freezing rainstorm," Russell revealed, pressing a button on the podium remote.
Behind him, a massive digital projection screen lit up.
Exhibits appeared on the screen: bank records, text messages, and recorded audio files.
"This is a recorded phone call from yesterday afternoon," Russell announced, "between Carl Baxter and an investigator working for Julian Vance of Vance Development."
Russell clicked play.
Carl Baxter’s rough voice filled the ballroom speaker system: ‘...Look, I don't care about the kid. Just make sure the two hundred grand hits my account before I testify against Morrison in court on Monday. If the Ohio cousin gets custody, she splits the settlement money with Vance’s firm...’
The ballroom erupted into sheer pandemonium. Reporters leapt from their seats, shouting questions at the stage.
"Furthermore," Russell said, raising his hand to silence the crowd, "my legal team has uncovered that Martha Evans—the alleged blood relative—signed a sworn confession two hours ago in Cleveland, admitting she was paid two hundred thousand dollars by Julian Vance to file a fraudulent custody claim."
In his luxury suite across town, Julian Vance dropped his champagne glass. The crystal shattered on the marble floor as his face turned ash-gray.
"Julian Vance did not care about the welfare of Sylvie Morrison," Russell’s voice boomed through the television speakers. "He sought to break a father's heart to steal a company's stock. But he failed to realize one fundamental truth: wealth is not measured by stock prices or real estate holdings. Wealth is measured by the love we are willing to protect."
Russell paused, looking directly into the primary news camera.
"Tomorrow morning, in federal court, my attorneys will file formal criminal charges against Julian Vance, Carl Baxter, and their co-conspirators for extortion, witness tampering, and fraud. And tomorrow afternoon, I am officially stepping down as CEO of Morrison Development to serve as the full-time Chairman of the Morrison Foundation."
The crowd stared in utter disbelief.

"My daughter saved my life with her bare hands when I was dying on a restaurant floor," Russell concluded, his eyes shining with proud, emotional tears. "The rest of my life belongs to her, her brother, and every child in this city who needs a hand to hold when the storm comes. Thank you."
Russell stepped away from the podium as the entire room stood up, erupting into thunderous, deafening applause that echoed through the grand hotel and across the city of Chicago.
