Chapter 9 - The Trial of Two Families

The Baton Rouge Family Courthouse was bathed in the harsh morning sunlight of Friday.
Mara sat at the defense table in Courtroom 3B, wearing a dark navy blue suit that Damon had purchased for her. Beside her sat Arthur Vance, the top defense attorney in the state.
Across the aisle, Bryce Caldwell sat in a bright orange parish jumpsuit, handcuffed at the wrists, flanked by a court-appointed public defender. His face was pale, sunken, and ruined.
In the gallery behind Mara sat Damon Cross.
He looked imposing, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his broad shoulders filling the bench, his right arm resting in a dark silk sling. Beside him sat Ruth, holding hands with Julian, Leo, Tristan, Eli, and little Lily. The five children were dressed impeccably, sitting quietly, supporting Mara.
Judge Harriet Cole, a stern woman in her sixties with silver hair and sharp glasses, peered down from the bench.
"This court is in session regarding the custody of Lily Caldwell," Judge Cole announced, slamming her gavel. "Mr. Caldwell... you are currently held on two million dollars bail for felony arson and conspiracy charges. Do you have anything to present to this court regarding your petition for custody?"
Bryce’s public defender stood up nervously. "Your Honor... in light of my client's pending criminal trial, we wish to withdraw the petition for custody."
"I see," Judge Cole said coldly. She looked over her glasses at Mara’s table. "Mr. Vance. Does the mother have a statement?"
Arthur Vance stood up gracefully. "Your Honor, Miss Mara Ellison has secured permanent, high-salaried employment as the chief household director and educator at the Crossmoor Estate, earning a salary of one hundred and twenty thousand dollars annually. She resides in a private suite on fifty acres of secure property. Furthermore, we present affidavits from child psychologists testifying to the exceptional environment provided for both Lily and the four Cross children under her care."
Judge Cole looked over the documents Vance passed forward, her eyebrows lifting in genuine surprise. She looked past Mara to Damon Cross sitting in the gallery, then at the five happy, well-behaved children sitting beside him.
Judge Cole tapped her pen against the mahogany bench.
"Mara Ellison," Judge Cole said, her tone softening significantly. "Step forward."
Mara stood up, her heart pounding, her hands trembling slightly as she walked to the podium.
"I have read your file, Miss Ellison," Judge Cole said gently. "You have fought through poverty, abandonment, and relentless harassment to keep your daughter safe. And looking at this courtroom today... I see a family that stands behind you."
The judge raised her gavel.
"Sole physical and legal custody of Lily Caldwell is hereby awarded permanently to Mara Ellison. Child support obligations from Bryce Caldwell are terminated due to incarceration. Case closed."
BANG!
The gavel struck the wood.
Mara collapsed into tears of overwhelming joy. She turned around, and before she could even take a step, little Lily ran down the aisle and threw her arms around Mara’s waist.
"We won, Mommy! We won!" Lily cheered.
Damon stood up from the gallery bench, walking slowly down the aisle toward them. His amber eyes were shining with pride and deep affection.
He reached Mara, pulled her into his uninjured arm, and lifted her slightly off her feet, burying his face in her neck.

"You did it, Mara," Damon whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You got your girl."
"We did it," Mara sobbed, wrapping her arms around his neck, kissing his jaw fiercely. "We did it, Damon."
