Chapter 6 - The Counter-Strike

By eight o'clock that morning, the storm had passed, leaving Chicago blanketed under a bright, blinding sheet of fresh white snow. Inside the high-ceilinged living room of Grant Holloway’s private estate in the quiet suburb of Lake Forest, a fire roared in the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace.

Sarah Bennett sat on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding baby Ellie close to her chest. Tears fell down her face as she buried her nose in her baby’s soft hair, breathing in the scent of warm milk and baby lotion.

Beside her sat Maya. The eight-year-old girl’s left arm was resting comfortably in its clean white cast, but her face was glowing with a joy that had erased the haunted look from her eyes. She leaned her head against her mother’s shoulder, her good right hand tightly holding Sarah’s fingers.

"I kept her close, Mama," Maya whispered softly. "Like you said. I didn't let them take her."

Sarah pulled Maya into her arms, kissing the top of her head repeatedly. "I know, my brave girl. I know. You saved her."

Grant stood near the tall archway leading into the kitchen, a mug of coffee in his hand, watching the reunion in quiet silence. For the first time in his professional life, the multi-billion-dollar deals and corporate victories seemed utterly insignificant compared to the raw, human light filling his living room.

Suddenly, Marcus stepped into the room, his face tense. "Grant. We have a situation at the main security gates."

Grant’s expression hardened. "Vale?"

"Worse," Marcus replied, pulling up a live video feed on his handheld monitor. "She brought the authority with her."

Parked outside the wrought-iron perimeter gates of the estate were four marked Chicago Police Department squad cars, alongside two black municipal vans registered to the Department of Children and Family Services. Standing in front of the gate was Evelyn Vale, accompanied by a tall man in a navy trench coat—Assistant District Attorney Richard Vance—and six armed police officers.

"They have a signed warrant for immediate physical retrieval of state wards," Arthur Vance said, rushing into the room with a stack of legal briefs. "Vale went to a different county judge at six this morning, claiming you used armed mercenaries to raid a state-licensed medical facility and kidnap a psychiatric patient. She’s framing this as an active hostage situation!"

Grant didn't blink. "Are the news networks here?"

"I called every major news station in Illinois twenty minutes ago," Arthur smirked. "There are three satellite news trucks parked right behind the police line. The morning broadcast is airing this live across the Midwest."

"Good," Grant said, setting his coffee mug down. "Let's go talk to Mrs. Vale."

Grant walked down the long, snow-draped driveway toward the iron gates, flanked by Arthur, Marcus, and two private security guards. On the other side of the gate, Evelyn Vale stood with her hands tucked inside her cream coat, a smirk touching her lips as she saw Grant approaching.

"Mr. Holloway!" the Assistant District Attorney yelled over the wind, stepping forward with a rolled paper document. "You are in violation of multiple state statutes! Open this gate immediately and surrender the minor children and the fugitive Sarah Bennett, or we will breach the property!"

Grant stopped two feet from the gate, his physical presence towering over the iron bars. He looked past the officer directly at Evelyn Vale.

"Evelyn," Grant said, his voice echoing clearly across the frozen driveway, picked up by the directional microphones of the news crews behind the police vehicles. "You came all the way out here in the cold just to deliver yourself to the police?"

Vale’s smirk faltered slightly. "What are you talking about, Grant? You are the one who committed a felony last night."

Grant signaled to Arthur, who opened a leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of printed financial ledgers, legal documents, and digital logs retrieved from the Pine Crest Sanatorium server.

"These are the private financial records of Lighthouse Administrative Services LLC," Grant declared, his voice carrying maximum volume for the television cameras. "They detail sixty-four illegal private adoptions conducted over the last four years through Bright Harbor Family Mission. They detail offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands held under the name of Evelyn Vale, containing over three million dollars in illegal placement fees."

The press reporters behind the police line gasped, frantically signaling their cameramen to zoom in on the documents held up by Arthur Vance.

"Furthermore," Grant continued, holding up a forensic medical report, "this is an affidavit signed by three independent pediatric trauma specialists regarding the double compound fracture sustained by eight-year-old Maya Bennett—an injury inflicted personally by Evelyn Vale when the child attempted to prevent the illegal sale of her infant sister!"

The police officers standing beside the Assistant District Attorney began looking at each other nervously. The lead police sergeant lowered his hand from his sidearm, turning his head toward Vale. "Mrs. Vale... what is he talking about?"

"He’s lying!" Vale yelled, her voice cracking with sudden panic as she saw the news cameras tracking her every movement. "He’s a madman with too much money! Sergeant, break that lock! Order your men to break the lock!"

"I wouldn't advise that, Sergeant," Arthur Vance added smoothly, handing a signed legal document through the iron bars to the officer. "This is an emergency arrest warrant issued fifteen minutes ago by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, signed by Federal Judge Sarah Jenkins. The FBI Human Trafficking Task Force is currently executing a search warrant on Bright Harbor’s downtown headquarters."

As if on cue, the distant wail of federal sirens echoed down the suburban street. Four dark blue unmarked suburban vehicles pulled up behind the police cars, their red and blue emergency lights flashing against the white snow.

Six federal agents wearing blue jackets with "FBI" printed in bold yellow letters stepped out of the vehicles, led by a sharp-eyed female Special Agent holding a set of steel handcuffs.

"Evelyn Vale?" the FBI agent shouted, marching directly past the local police officers. "You are under arrest for federal human trafficking, conspiracy, wire fraud, and kidnapping."

Evelyn Vale spun around, her face turning as white as the snow beneath her leather boots. "No! You don't understand! I am protected! I have connections in the Mayor's office—"

"Save it for your arraignment, Mrs. Vale," the FBI agent snapped, spinning Vale around and slapping the heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists with two loud, sharp clicks.

Grant stood quietly behind his iron gate, his arms folded across his chest, watching in stone silence as the woman who had terrorized two little girls on the frozen streets of Chicago was shoved into the back seat of a federal utility vehicle.

May you like

As the FBI convoy pulled away, carrying Vale toward federal holding, the lead police sergeant turned to Grant, tipping his cap slightly. "Sorry for the inconvenience, Mr. Holloway."

"No inconvenience, Sergeant," Grant said quietly. "Just clearing the trash off the street."
