Chapter 10 - The Christmas Lanterns

Four years after the night that changed everything. Christmas Eve at Cedar Ridge Lodge.

The lodge was bathed in the soft, golden glow of a hundred hanging paper lanterns, floating gently across the quiet water of the frozen lake outside. Heavy snow fell softly from the night sky, dusting the pine trees in pure white.

Inside the grand hall, a roaring fire crackled merrily in the stone fireplace. The scent of roasted turkey, fresh gingerbread, and mulled cider filled the warm air.

The grand dining table was packed with people.

There were no corporate investors, no arrogant socialites, and no fake smiles. Sitting around the table were the families from the local housing foundation, our warehouse workers, Marcus and his grandchildren, and my father Richard, who sat quietly near the end of the table, happily helping Eli build a complex Lego tower.

Grandma Eleanor sat at the head of the table, her face peaceful, watching the joy overflowing in her home.

My mother Denise was not there. She had moved to Florida after her release from prison, living a quiet, lonely life on a small pension provided by the family trust, still too proud to seek the forgiveness that was always waiting for her. But her absence no longer left a shadow in our hearts.

I stood by the tall glass windows overlooking the snowy terrace, wrapped in a warm knitted sweater.

Julian walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin softly on my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" Julian whispered, kissing my cheek.

I looked out at the snow falling on the front porch—the very porch where my mother had slammed the oak door in my face four years ago.

"I was thinking about how cold it was that night," I said softly, leaning back into his warm chest. "And how warm it is now."

Eli came running across the wooden floor, holding a glowing paper lantern in his hands.

"Mommy! Julian!" Eli squealed happily, his cheeks rosy with excitement. "Grandma Eleanor says it's time to release the Christmas lanterns over the lake!"

"Lead the way, buddy," Julian laughed, picking Eli up and swinging him onto his shoulders.

We stepped out onto the snowy terrace together, surrounded by dozens of our friends and family. The cool night air was fresh and sweet, filled with the soft sound of Christmas carols drifting from the indoor speakers.

Together, Julian, Eli, and I held the edges of our large golden paper lantern. We lit the small candle inside, watching as the paper expanded, filling with warm, glowing light.

"Make a wish, Eli," I whispered, holding his small hand.

"I don't need to make a wish, Mommy," Eli said, looking up at me with bright, happy eyes. "I already have everything I ever wanted."

We lifted our hands, letting the golden lantern rise gently into the quiet night sky.

It drifted up into the dark clouds, joining dozens of other flickering golden lights floating over the snow-covered pines of Cedar Ridge—a beacon of hope, truth, and unending love shining brightly in the dark.

The heavy oak door of Cedar Ridge Lodge stood wide open behind us, casting a path of brilliant, golden light out into the snow, welcoming every single soul who sought a home.
