Chapter 5 - The Gift of the Viper

The next morning, Marcus Vale stood in Elliot’s private office at Prescott Tower, throwing a thick file onto the glass desk.

"You went to Newark," Marcus said, his voice laced with a dangerous mixture of anger and panic. "You paid off an eviction notice for a family living in a slum, Elliot. The press is going to get hold of this! They’re already running rumors that you’ve suffered a neurological breakdown from the oxygen deprivation during the flight!"

Elliot didn't look up from his desk. He was writing a letter on heavy, cream-colored executive stationery.

"Let them print what they want, Marcus," Elliot replied calmly.

"You don't understand!" Marcus yelled, leaning over the desk. "Board members are receiving anonymous tips that you're planning to liquidate corporate assets for charitable foundations! Our stock is volatile! If you don't issue a statement reassuring the market that you are fully focused on the third-quarter earnings, we will face a shareholder revolt!"

Elliot set his fountain pen down. He looked up at Marcus with a quiet, terrifying stillness.

"Who sent those anonymous tips to the board, Marcus?"

Marcus froze. A light sheen of sweat broke out on his forehead. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."

Elliot opened a drawer and pulled out a digital audio recorder, laying it on the glass surface between them. He hit play.

Marcus’s voice filled the room, recorded forty-eight hours ago during a private phone call: "...Elliot’s heart is compromised. If we leak the Newark story, we can argue he's mentally unfit under Section 4 of the corporate bylaws. I can step into the executive role before the weekend."

Marcus backed away from the desk, his face turning gray. "Elliot... listen to me... I was trying to protect the company. You weren't in your right mind—"

"I brought you out of a regional firm twelve years ago," Elliot said, his voice barely above a whisper, yet vibrating with absolute authority. "I gave you power, status, and wealth beyond your wildest dreams. And the moment my heart stopped for fifty-two seconds, you couldn't wait to pick my pockets."

"Elliot, please—"

"Security is waiting in your office, Marcus," Elliot said, picking up his pen again. "Your corporate accounts have been frozen. Your non-compete clause will be enforced to the absolute limit of the law. You have ten minutes to clear your desk before you are escorted off the premises."

Marcus stood paralyzed for three seconds, realized the absolute finality in Elliot’s eyes, and turned on his heel, exiting the office in a silent, disgraced rush.

Elliot looked at the blank window. He didn't feel victorious. He felt only an overwhelming sense of urgency.

He picked up his phone and dialed the chief of pediatric surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

"Dr. Aris," Elliot said. "This is Elliot Graves. I am transferring five million dollars to your research endowment in twenty minutes. In exchange, I want the surgical team, the private pediatric suite, and the experimental vascular protocol prepared for Maya Lin by tomorrow morning."

"Mr. Graves," the doctor replied, stunned. "That protocol is still pending secondary funding approval—"

"It is funded," Elliot interrupted firmly. "Get the operating room ready."
