Chapter 7 - The Road Back Home

The morning sun broke through the autumn clouds over Ethan’s sprawling estate in Gates Mills, Ohio.

For five years, the seventy-acre property had felt like a mausoleum—a silent, pristine prison of empty rooms, covered furniture, and forgotten toys.

Today, the front gates swung open as Ethan’s SUV pulled up the winding stone driveway.

Beside him, the twins were pressed against the glass, their eyes wide as they recognized the massive stone mansion, the swimming pool, and the large wooden playground set in the backyard that Ethan had refused to tear down.

"Look!" Aaron pointed out the window. "My swing set! The red one!"

"It's still there," Ethan smiled, tears threatening to spill over again. "Everything is still there, buddy."

Jonah sat quietly in the back seat, staring nervously at the grand entrance of the house. He looked down at his taped sneaker, pulling his arms inward.

Ethan noticed the boy's hesitation in the rearview mirror.

He parked the vehicle, turned around, and looked at Jonah.

"Jonah," Ethan said gently. "This is your home now too."

Jonah blinked. "I... I don't have a room here, Mr. Caldwell."

"You have the big room on the second floor with the balcony," Ethan said. "The one overlooking the lake. And this afternoon, we’re going to the store to buy you fifty pairs of shoes without tape."

Jonah’s lips trembled. He didn't say thank you; he just nodded, biting his lip as he wiped a tear away with his sleeve.

The front doors of the mansion flew open, and Mrs. Hughes—the house manager who had worked for Ethan’s family for twenty years—came running down the marble steps. She was crying hysterically, clutching a white dish towel to her chest.

"Oh my God..." Mrs. Hughes sobbed, dropping to her knees as the twins tumbled out of the SUV. "My babies! My sweet boys!"

She threw her arms around Lucas and Aaron, kissing their cheeks, while the twins laughed, wrapping their arms around her neck.

"Mrs. Hughes," Lucas said, pulling back with a grin. "Daddy said we can have pancakes for lunch!"

"You can have pancakes, ice cream, and every sweet in this house for the rest of your lives!" she wept, holding them tight.

Ethan stepped out of the vehicle, watching his children laugh for the first time in five years.

Vance pulled up in a sedan behind them, stepping out with a stack of legal documents under his arm.

"Federal prosecutors just finalized the asset seizure on Pendelton’s estate," Vance reported, walking up to Ethan. "Every cent he stole from your wife's trust fund is being restored. Plus, the state governor just signed the emergency custody papers for Jonah. He’s officially under your legal guardianship as of ten minutes ago."

Ethan shook Vance’s hand firmly. "Thank you, Vance. For everything."

"Don't thank me," Vance said, looking over at Jonah, who was currently being shown the living room by the twins. "Thank the kid with the blue car."
