Chapter 6 - The Awakening in 4B

By noon, the news of Vanguard Holdings’ catastrophic collapse had rocked the Chicago financial markets. Journalists scrambled to figure out why Graham Vale—the city's most formidable, calculating billionaire—had suddenly liquidated his own holdings to obliterate his rival in a single morning.
Unaware of the financial war that had just concluded, June Carter slowly opened her eyes in Room 402 of Lake View Mercy Medical Center.
The room was bathed in soft, warm sunlight streaming through the clean glass windows. The harsh, sterile smell of the ER was gone, replaced by the delicate fragrance of fresh yellow roses sitting in a crystal vase on the window sill.
June blinked, trying to clear her vision. She felt a warm, small weight resting against her hip.
Sitting on the edge of her bed, carefully coloring a picture of a giant bear in a brand-new coloring book, was Emmy. She was wearing a soft, pink fleece sweater and dark blue jeans, her blonde curls clean, shiny, and tied up with a silk ribbon.
"Emmy?" June rasped, her voice dry and weak.
"Nana!" Emmy squealed, dropping her green crayon and carefully climbing up the bed to press her small face against June’s shoulder. "You woke up! The machines aren't beep-booping loud anymore!"
June wrapped a weak, trembling arm around her granddaughter, kissing her forehead desperately. "Oh, my sweet baby... oh thank God... where are we? How did we get into a room like this?"
"The big man brought us," Emmy said, pointing a small finger toward the armchair near the window.
June turned her head quickly.
Sitting in the armchair, wearing a dark wool sweater, his laptop resting on his knees, was Graham Vale. He looked tired, dark circles under his sharp eyes, but his posture remained relaxed and steady.
"Mr. Vale," Marcus said, stepping softly into the room from the hallway, carrying a tray of fresh soup and warm tea. "The transfer documents for the South Side properties are finalized."
June tried to sit up, her hand clutching her hospital gown nervously. "Who... who are you, sir? What is happening? I... I don't have money for a private room like this. Please, don't let them take Emmy to the state shelter!"
Graham set his laptop aside, standing up and walking slowly to the side of the hospital bed. His sharp face softened into an expression of profound, gentle respect.
"Mrs. Carter," Graham said softly. "My name is Graham Vale. You don't need to worry about the hospital bill. Everything has been taken care of."
"Taken care of?" June’s eyes filled with sudden, fearful tears. "Sir, I'm a seamstress. My shop closed two months ago. We were evicted on Tuesday... we don't have anywhere to go. I can't pay you back for this!"
"You don't owe me anything, Mrs. Carter," Graham said gently. "In fact, I owe your granddaughter a debt I can never fully repay."

June looked from Graham’s expensive clothes to Emmy, who was happily swinging her small legs against the mattress. "What did Emmy do?"
Graham reached out, gently touching Emmy’s soft hair. "When I was lost in a storm last night, looking for a way to win a war that didn't matter... she offered me the only protection she had in the world. She taught me what really matters."
