Chapter 6 - The Gold Coast Society

Two weeks later, Jenna’s life had undergone a dizzying transformation.
She and the twins had moved out of the freezing studio apartment into a sunlit, three-bedroom corporate apartment in Lincoln Park. The girls were enrolled in a top-tier early childhood school, wearing warm, high-quality winter coats and laughing every single afternoon when they came home.
Jenna had thrown herself into her new role at the Mercer Foundation with a fierce, passionate dedication. Within her first ten days, she had restructured their emergency relief distribution, cutting through corporate red tape to ensure single mothers received food vouchers and rent assistance within twenty-four hours instead of weeks.
Ethan worked alongside her every day. The cold, corporate executive who had walked out on his billionaire father's dinner was changing, too. Spending time with Jenna—and playing tag with Ivy and Kate in the foundation’s community center—had brought a light into his life he had never known existed.
However, their growing closeness did not go unnoticed.
On a cold Thursday evening, the Mercer Foundation held its annual winter gala at the prestigious Drake Hotel on Michigan Avenue. The ballroom was a sea of black ties, silk gowns, diamond necklaces, and Chicago's most powerful political and financial figures.
Jenna walked into the ballroom wearing a modest, elegant emerald green gown that Ethan had sent to her apartment earlier that afternoon. Her hair was styled in soft waves, her natural beauty shining brightly without the exhaustion that had haunted her face for years.
Ethan met her at the entrance, his eyes widening in breathtaking admiration. "You look... incredible, Jenna," he murmured, offering his arm.
"I feel like an imposter," Jenna whispered back nervously, looking around at the wealthy socialites sipping crystal flutes of champagne. "These people operate in a world I don't belong in."
"You belong here more than any of them," Ethan said fiercely, squeezing her hand reassuringly.

Suddenly, a voice like cold iron cut through the ambient music.
"So this is the charity case my son has been spending all his time with."
