Chapter 8 - The Echoes of the Past

The morning sun filtered through the tall, leaded glass windows of the Kesler estate library on Beacon Hill, casting long golden shafts across the dark hardwood floors. Eighteen months had passed since the snowstorm that brought Elena and Titan to Stefan’s doorstep, and the house had long since shed its reputation as a mausoleum of violence and shadow.
Elena stood by the fireplace, adjusting a small crystal vase filled with summer hydrangeas. She wore a simple, elegant ivory linen dress, her hair pinned back in soft waves, her storm-gray eyes bright and at peace.
Behind her, lying on an oversized custom leather mat near the hearth, was Titan. The massive Neapolitan mastiff had fully recovered from his shoulder wound, though a faint white scar remained beneath his heavy, slate-gray folds. He was older now, his muzzle lightly touched with silver, but his presence remained an anchor of quiet power in the room.
The heavy mahogany doors opened silently. Stefan walked in. He wore a dark tailored shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, the scar on his left temple catching the morning light. In his hand, he held a thick, leather-bound folio stamped with the double-headed falcon of Vance Maritime.
"The federal audit on the South Boston terminals is officially closed," Stefan said, his voice deep and calm as he walked toward her. He set the folio down on the mahogany desk. "The Justice Department cleared every asset. The North End operations are entirely legal, fully unionized, and operating at record volume."
Elena turned, a small, triumphant smile touching her lips. She walked over to him, resting her hands against the lapels of his shirt. "And Liam's remaining associates?"
"Scattered," Stefan answered, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her close against his chest. "Some took plea deals in New York. Others left the state. None of them will ever set foot in Boston again."
He looked down into her eyes, his expression softening in that rare, private way that belonged only to her. "You took a broken empire, Elena, and you turned it into something clean. Your father would have been astounded."
"My father built his empire on fear and ledgers," Elena whispered, her fingers resting lightly against the back of his neck. "We built ours on loyalty. That’s the difference."

Stefan leaned down, capturing her lips in a slow, deep kiss that carried the quiet weight of everything they had survived together.
From the floor, Titan let out a long, contented huff, resting his heavy head back down on his paws as the morning breeze rustled the oak trees outside the iron gates.
