Chapter 8 - Unbroken

An hour later, Logan walked up the sweeping driveway of the Sterling estate in Greenwich. The massive iron gates opened as his car approached, leading to a grand Georgian mansion surrounded by manicured lawns and marble statues.

To anyone else, it was a display of unimaginable wealth. To Logan, it was a hollow museum built on a foundation of cowardice.

A butler escorted Logan into a vast, panelled library lined with leather-bound books and oil paintings. Graham Sterling stood near the fireplace, holding a glass of wine. Celeste sat on a velvet sofa, her eyes wide and anxious.

As Logan entered, Graham put his glass down and stepped forward, adopting a posture of warm, paternal authority.

"Logan," Graham said smoothly. "I'm glad you decided to come. I knew that once you reviewed the situation rationally, you would see that we are people who can help each other."

Logan stood in the center of the room, refusing to sit, keeping his coat on. He looked at Graham with a coldness that made the temperature in the room seem to drop.

"You blocked my mother’s cardiac treatment," Logan stated, offering no greetings, no pretense.

Celeste gasped, turning her head to her husband in shock. "Graham? What is he talking about? You said you invited him here to talk!"

"Celeste, stay out of this," Graham warned sternly, before turning back to Logan. "I didn't block it, Logan. I simply highlighted an administrative delay. A delay that can be instantly resolved. I have the authority to place Margaret Thorne at the very top of the procedure list tomorrow morning. She can have the best surgeons in the country."

"In exchange for what?" Logan asked, his voice dripping with venom.

Graham smiled slightly, believing he held all the cards. "In exchange for your presence in our lives. A formal public statement acknowledging our relationship, a non-disclosure regarding the circumstances of your adoption, and... a chance for us to be a family. We want to compensate you, Logan. We want to leave you your rightful share of the Sterling estate."

Logan stared at the man in front of him. He felt no anger left—only a profound, pitying disgust.

"You really believe that everyone has a price, don't you?" Logan said softly. "You think you can starve a woman of healthcare and then buy her son's love with a real estate empire."

"I am offering to save your mother's life!" Graham snapped, his calm facade slipping. "Without that trial, her chances are slim! You are a doctor—you know the statistics!"

"I do know the statistics," Logan replied calmly. "Which is why I spent the drive down here on the phone with the Chief of Cardiology at Mass General in Boston."

Graham froze.

Logan took a step closer to Graham, looking down at him with crushing moral superiority. "I don't need your hospital, Sterling. Mass General’s cardiac team reviewed her charts twenty minutes ago. Because of my research collaboration with their surgical team, Margaret is being admitted to their high-risk TAVR program tomorrow at 8:00 AM. Operated on by the top specialist in North America."

Celeste buried her face in her hands, weeping quietly.

Graham’s face drained of color as he realized his leverage had completely evaporated.

"And as for your leverage," Logan continued, his voice echoing sharply off the high ceilings. "I have already submitted a formal complaint to the State Medical Ethics Board detailing your attempt to use hospital board influence to manipulate patient admission for personal coercion. By tomorrow morning, every major donor on your board will know exactly what kind of man holds the chairmanship."

"You... you wouldn't destroy my reputation," Graham stammered, his voice trembling. "It would ruin the family!"

"You ruined this family thirty-four years ago when you traded a child for your ego," Logan spat. "I am not destroying your reputation, Mr. Sterling. I am simply allowing the world to see you clearly."

Logan turned toward the door. Before he left, he stopped and looked at Celeste, who was trembling on the sofa.

"My mother taught me that true strength isn't about being born perfect," Logan said softly. "It’s about loving without conditions. I hope one day you understand what you gave away."

Without waiting for another word, Logan walked out of the mansion, leaving the Sterling empire crumbling behind him.
