Chapter 10 - The Captain’s Seat

Four years later.

The bright morning sun streamed through the wide glass windshield of a brand-new Boeing 787 Dreamliner parked at Gate A1 at Los Angeles International Airport.

In the left seat of the cockpit—the Captain’s seat—sat Michael Hayes.

I wore four crisp gold stripes on the shoulders of my dark blue uniform jacket. Pinned proudly over my left breast pocket were my gold Captain’s wings, and right beside them rested the small, laminated gold star sticker from five years ago.

The cockpit door was open.

"Captain Hayes," a familiar, warm voice called out from the forward galley.

I turned around. Karen Vance, now Director of In-Flight Services for Trans-American Airlines, stepped into the flight deck, wearing her executive blazer.

"Passenger manifest is complete, Captain," Karen smiled brightly. "We are fully loaded for Flight 100 to Boston."

"Thank you, Karen," I smiled back, adjusting my headset. "How's the First Class cabin looking?"

"Take a look for yourself," she winked.

I unbuckled my shoulder harness, stood up, and stepped out into the First Class galley.

Sitting in Seat 1A was a ten-year-old boy. He was wearing a neat denim jacket, reading an aviation magazine, and clutching a faded stuffed fox under his arm.

Beside him in Seat 1B was Eleanor Bennett, looking radiant and peaceful.

And sitting across the aisle in Row 2 was Daniel Bennett, looking proudly at his grandson.

As soon as Noah saw me step out of the cockpit wearing my four Captain stripes, his jaw dropped in utter amazement.

"MICHAEL!" Noah yelled, unbuckling his belt and jumping up to give me a massive hug around my waist. "Look at your hat! You're the real pilot now!"

"I am, buddy," I laughed, lifting him up into my arms just like I had seen his grandfather do years ago. "And you're still my favorite co-pilot."

Eleanor walked over, looking at my four stripes, her eyes filled with tears of quiet joy. "We wouldn't have missed your inaugural flight as Captain for the world, Michael."

"Thank you, Eleanor," I said softly. "For everything. For believing in me."

"You earned every inch of those wings, Michael," Daniel Bennett said, stepping up and shaking my hand with strong, enduring warmth. "Now go show this airline how a real Captain flies."

I walked back into the cockpit, sliding into the leather Captain's seat.

Outside, the clear blue California sky stretched endlessly toward the horizon, bright and full of promise.

I pulled down the overhead microphone, flipped the intercom switch, and took a deep, clear breath.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard Trans-American Flight 100 with non-stop service to Boston. This is your Captain, Michael Hayes speaking..."

I paused, looking through the cockpit door toward Row 1, where Noah was waving at me with his stuffed fox.

"...I'd like to extend a special welcome to every single passenger on board today. It doesn't matter where you came from, what you're wearing, or what seat is printed on your ticket. On this aircraft, everyone belongs."

May you like

I clicked off the microphone, released the parking brakes, and pushed the throttles forward.

And together, we soared up into the infinite sky.
