Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Light
The sun began to set over the city of Chicago, casting a long, beautiful golden light across the waters of Lake Michigan and the rooftops of Oakwood.
Inside the grand manor, the warm scent of roasted chicken and fresh baked bread filled the halls.
In the second-floor nursery, baby Nora was fast asleep in her crib, holding her favorite plush stuffed bear, her breathing soft, deep, and peaceful.
Adrian stepped quietly into Lily’s bedroom.
The room was painted a soft, warm lavender, filled with books, toys, and framed photographs of their family trips to the coast.
Lily was lying under her soft duvet, her small head resting on a plush pillow. Hanging on the wall directly above her bed was a framed velvet shadowbox containing her mother’s silver star locket, shining brightly under the soft glow of her bedside lamp.
Adrian walked over and sat on the edge of her bed, tucking the blanket neatly around her shoulders.
“Dad?” Lily whispered, her voice sleepy and sweet.
“Yes, Lily?”
“Do you remember the day I walked into your big building?” she asked, looking up at him.
“I remember every single second of that day, sweetheart,” Adrian smiled, gently stroking her forehead.
“I was so scared,” Lily admitted softly, her dark eyes reflecting the warm lamp light. “I thought nobody would help us. I thought everyone in big suits was mean.”
Adrian reached down and gently cupped her cheek, looking down at his daughter with a love so deep it filled every corner of his soul.
“You were the bravest person in Chicago that morning, Lily,” Adrian said softly. “You didn't just find help for Nora. You saved my life, too.”
Lily smiled, a deep, comfortable sigh escaping her lips as her eyes slowly closed, drifting off into a safe, peaceful sleep.
“I love you, Dad,” she whispered into the quiet room.
Adrian leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss against her forehead, whispering close to her ear.
“I love you too, my sweet girl. Forever and always.”
Adrian stood up slowly and walked to the window, looking out at the peaceful, snow-free gardens beneath the starlit sky.
The shadows of his family’s past had been swept away forever.
