Chapter 7 - The Shadows in Brooklyn

While the betrayal in Chicago had been cut out like a cancer, the roots of the conspiracy ran deeper than Marco and Arthur Vance.
The Russian syndicate in Brooklyn—headed by a ruthless patriarch named Mikhail Volkov—was not accustomed to losing a three-hundred-million-dollar territorial expansion without a fight.
Two days after the siege at the silos, I sat in my private penthouse overlooking Central Park in New York. Rain streaked down the massive glass windows as I reviewed the financial trails Volkov had used to fund Marco’s operations.
Leo Vance walked into the study, laying a secure tablet on my desk.
"Volkov’s men were spotted at JFK an hour ago, Boss," Leo reported. "He’s calling an emergency meeting of the Eastern Commission tonight at his estate in Long Island."
"How many men does he have with him?" I asked, sipping my espresso.
"Thirty armed guards on the estate grounds," Leo replied. "He thinks he’s untouchable because he’s on his home turf."
I stood up, pulling my tailored suit coat onto my shoulders. "Volkov thought he could buy my city through a traitor. He needs to learn that Chicago doesn't bow to Brooklyn."

"Are we taking a full strike team?" Leo asked, his hand resting on his weapon.
"No," I replied, a cold, calculating calm settling over my mind. "We’re going to hit him where it hurts most—his bank accounts and his reputation. Call our contacts at the Treasury Department. It’s time to release the encrypted files Vincent retrieved from the basement."
