Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Nursery

At 11:00 a.m., while Ethan was preparing to leave for the corporate headquarters, the house's perimeter alarm chimed once. It wasn't the full siren—just the warning indicator that someone had breached the outer sensor line near the river bluff.

Ethan moved instantly. He grabbed his security console, tracking the live feeds. A single black sedan was parked on the service road near the old boat dock. Two men were moving quickly through the trees toward the rear terrace.

"Mara, take the girls into the wine cellar," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a flat, calm tone that frightened the social worker more than the alarm. "Lock the door from the inside and do not open it until you hear my voice."

"Ethan, what's happening?"

"Julian is getting desperate," Ethan said, pulling a heavy steel flashlight from his desk drawer. "He knows what's on that flash drive, and he knows he can't win the board vote if those files see the light of day."

Ethan stepped out onto the rear terrace just as the two men reached the stone steps. They were the same men from the motel room.

"Mr. Cole," the larger one said, raising a heavy crowbar. "We told you we just wanted the drive. You should have stayed in the hospital."

Ethan didn't answer with words. He moved with a speed that came from years of boxing in his youth and the raw, primal instinct of a man protecting his home. He swung the heavy flashlight, striking the larger man's wrist with a clean, sickening crack. The crowbar clattered against the stone.

The second man lunged forward, but Ethan stepped inside his guard, slamming his elbow into the man's chest and throwing him over the stone balustrade into the thick bushes below.

The larger man, cradling his broken wrist, backed away down the steps, his face pale with shock. "You're crazy, Cole! You're going to lose everything anyway!"

"I already lost the only thing that mattered seven years ago because I was a coward," Ethan said, standing at the top of the steps, his chest heaving, his suit shirt torn at the shoulder. "I'm not that man anymore. Get off my property before I find out how deep the river is behind my house."
