Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the PastThe peace they had built over the next two weeks was shattered on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Sarah was home early, folding laundry in the living room, while Lily was coloring at the coffee table.

A loud, aggressive pounding echoed from the front door. It wasn't Bear’s respectful rumble or a neighbor's polite tap. It was violent.

Sarah’s stomach dropped. She opened the door, and the blood drained completely from her face.

Standing on the porch, soaking wet and smelling strongly of cheap alcohol, was Jason. Her ex-husband.

"Hey, Sarah," Jason sneered, pushing his way past her into the hallway before she could stop him. He looked disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, wearing a tattered jacket. "Long time, no see."

"Jason, get out," Sarah said, her voice shaking as she backed up, instinctively trying to block his view of Lily. "You have no right to be here. The court order says—"

"Screw the court order!" Jason shouted, stepping closer. Lily whimpered from the living room, dropping her crayons. "I need money, Sarah. I know you've got some saved up. I lost my job, and the guys I owe money to aren't as patient as you are."

"I don't have any money, Jason! You took everything when you left!" Sarah cried out, tears of anger spilling over her lashes. "Get out of my house before I call the police!"

Jason’s face twisted into an ugly, volatile scowl. He lunged forward, grabbing Sarah aggressively by her upper arms, shaking her. "Don't lie to me, bitch! I know you're hiding cash here! Give it to me, or I'm taking Lily with me, and you'll never see her again!"

"Mommy!" Lily screamed, bursting into tears.

"Let go of her!" Sarah fought back, scratching at his hands, but Jason was fueled by desperation and alcohol, his grip tightening painfully on her skin.

Suddenly, the front door—which hadn't been fully latched—was thrown open with such violent force that it slammed against the interior wall, cracking the drywall.

A massive silhouette filled the doorway, blotting out the light from the street.

It was Bear.

He didn't look like the gentle giant who taught Lily how to ride a bike. He looked like an apocalyptic force of nature. His eyes were dead, cold, and dark with a terrifying, primal fury. The air in the hallway instantly grew heavy, suffocating.

Bear stepped into the house. He didn't yell. He didn't scream. He simply walked up to Jason, grabbed him by the throat with one massive hand, and lifted him completely off his feet.
