Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood

That evening, the true motive behind Julian’s return finally unraveled.

At 10:00 p.m., Marcus brought a small, battered metal lockbox into my study. The box had been recovered from a floorboard vault beneath Hannah’s former apartment by our tactical team, authorized by an emergency power of attorney Hannah had signed three months prior when she was still healthy.

Inside the lockbox lay a leather-bound journal, a USB flash drive, and a small brass key.

I plugged the flash drive into my encrypted desktop workstation.

A series of complex financial spreadsheets opened across the twin monitors. Thousands of offshore accounts, wire transfers, and shell company registries filled the screen—dating from 2012 to 2024.

Marcus stood behind my chair, leaning in to read the lines. "What is this?"

"This isn't just Julian’s money," I said, scrolling through the lines of code. "This is the master transaction ledger for the entire Midwest distribution network. It details every bribe paid to local officials, every illegal shipment brought through the Port of Milwaukee, and every bank account Julian used to launder money before he vanished."

I stopped at a specific folder named Project Phoenix.

I clicked it open.

Inside were four real estate deeds for commercial shipping terminals along the Milwaukee River—terminals currently owned and operated by my company, Whitaker Logistics.

"Look at the signatures, Marcus," I whispered.

Marcus leaned closer. His eyes widened.

The deeds bore my signature—dated 2017. But beside my signature was a secondary, secret rider clause that transferred forty-nine percent of the land rights to a nominee entity in Liechtenstein upon the death of the primary owner.

"He forged your signature before he faked his death," Marcus said, horrified. "If Julian proves in court that these land deeds are valid, he doesn't just get forty million dollars. He gets controlling equity in Whitaker Logistics' primary deep-water port."

"He doesn't want the children because he loves them," I realized, the cold picture finally complete. "He needs Sophie because her biological fingerprint was registered as the secondary authorization key for the Liechtenstein trust when she was born. Hannah knew it. She fled with the child and the brass key to keep Julian from accessing the port equity."

A sharp knock sounded on the study door.

One of our perimeter security officers stepped inside, holding a secure satellite phone.

"Sir," the officer reported. "Dr. Thorne just called from Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital. Hannah Carter has regained consciousness."
