Chapter 6 - The Emergency Boardroom War

At 7:45 AM on Friday morning, the glass-and-steel boardroom on the top floor of the Hansen Market Group headquarters in downtown Seattle was buzzing with anxious energy.

Ten executive board members sat around the forty-foot polished mahogany table, sipping espresso and speaking in urgent whispers. Word of the police activity at the Lakeside branch had reached the local morning news, and rumors of financial irregularities were spreading through the trading floors.

Richard Vance sat at the head of the table in a bespoke Italian suit, adjusting his golden cufflinks. He was a handsome, silver-tempered man in his late fifties, projecting an aura of complete, unshakeable confidence.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please relax," Richard said smoothly, raising his hands in a soothing gesture. "I’ve spoken with regional management. What happened at Lakeside yesterday was simply an unfortunate misunderstanding involving a rogue store employee and a minor software glitch in our regional pricing terminals. I have already dispatched a public relations team to control the narrative."

"Is that so, Richard?"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

I walked into the room, dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal-grey suit, my hair pinned back in an elegant, uncompromising bun. Behind me walked Arthur Vance, holding a thick briefcase, accompanied by three uniformed officers from the Seattle Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division.

The board members gasped. Several stood up in surprise.

Richard’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered. "Charlotte! We were wondering when you would arrive. We were just discussing the situation at Lakeside. I assure you, everything is under control—"

"Save your speech, Richard," I said, taking my seat at the head of the table opposite him. I motioned to Arthur, who opened his briefcase and laid stack after stack of bound documents in front of every board member.

"What is this?" one board member asked, picking up a folder labeled Internal Audit: Operation Ghost Account.

"What you have in front of you," I announced, my voice echoing clearly through the acoustic ceiling, "is the complete forensic paper trail detailing a three-year, twelve-million-dollar embezzlement and consumer fraud ring operating directly out of this corporate office."

Richard scoffed loudly, throwing himself back in his chair. "This is absurd! Charlotte, you've been spending too much time playing undercover boss in denim. If you think you can launch a wild witch hunt based on local store gossip—"

"It isn't store gossip, brother," Arthur Vance said, stepping forward, his eyes locked onto Richard with absolute coldness. "We captured Geoffrey Jimenez yesterday at the Lakeside branch. Under police interrogation last night, Geoffrey signed a full confession. He provided bank routing numbers, wire transfer receipts, and recorded phone calls."

Richard’s face hardened. His jaw clenched tight.

"Geoffrey confirmed that you designed the 'Neighborhood Hospitality' surcharge," Arthur continued, reading from a sworn affidavit. "You funneled twelve million dollars out of regional store operations into shell accounts in Delaware and the Cayman Islands. You used that money to cover heavy personal trading losses in offshore hedge funds."

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members began shouting, slamming their hands on the table, reading through the damning bank statements provided in the folders.

"This is a conspiracy!" Richard yelled, standing up and pointing an accusing finger at me. "You’re trying to force me out because I opposed your expansion plan into low-margin community markets! You're sacrificing the profitability of this company for your grandmother’s outdated socialist fantasy!"

"My grandmother built a forty-million-dollar company on respect, honesty, and fair prices!" I shouted back, standing up and slamming my palms on the table. "You built a criminal network on the backs of struggling mothers, seniors, and hard-working families who trusted our name!"

I turned to the board members. "As Chair of the Board and majority shareholder, I move for an immediate vote to terminate Richard Vance for cause, strip him of all stock options, and remove him from the executive committee."

"Seconded," Arthur said immediately, his voice unwavering despite the pain in his eyes.

"All in favor?" I called out.

Every single hand around the table shot into the air. Not a single person abstained.

Richard stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically around the room, realizing that his empire of deceit had completely collapsed around him in less than ten minutes.

The lead police officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Richard Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and corporate wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

As the officers snapped the cuffs onto Richard’s wrists and led him out of the boardroom in full view of hundreds of corporate employees, Richard turned his head to glare at me one last time.

May you like

"You ruined everything, Charlotte!" he snarled. "This company will drown in public relations lawsuits! You'll be bankrupt by the end of the quarter!"

"We won't drown, Richard," I replied quietly, looking him straight in the eyes. "Because unlike you, we actually have a foundation to stand on."
