CHAPTER 5 — THE WOMAN THEY WERE ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR

We stayed in the secured room for hours.
No one entered.
No one spoke.
Except Marcus.
Occasionally into encrypted calls.
Always short.
Always controlled.
Finally, I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Why did they recognize me?”
Marcus went silent.
Longer than before.
Then finally:
“Because you’re not random either.”
My heart stopped slightly.
“What does that mean?”
He sat down across from me.
Leaning forward.
Lowering his voice.
“Three months ago,” he said.
“A data breach exposed a list of families connected to a legacy financial protection case.”
A pause.
“You were on it.”
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
He nodded.
“It shouldn’t.”
Then he added something that changed everything.
“Your ex-husband wasn’t just leaving you.”
“He was transferring out of a monitored system.”
My mind reeled.
“What system?”
Marcus looked at me carefully.
“One that tracks inheritance-linked custody protections tied to corporate families.”
I shook my head.
“This is insane.”
He didn’t argue.
“I agree,” he said.
“But it’s real.”
And suddenly—
my past marriage didn’t look like heartbreak anymore.
May you like
It looked like extraction.
And I had been left behind inside it.
