Chapter 7 - The Shadows Lengthen

The next week was a blur of legal paperwork, medical checkups, and moving into our new temporary home.

The state-provided safe house was small—a simple, two-bedroom apartment in a quiet, gated community in a different part of the city. The furniture was sparse, but it was clean, bright, and most importantly, safe.

Valeria was discharged from the hospital on a sunny Thursday afternoon. She walked slowly, still sore from the surgery, but she was standing upright. The bent-over, shuffling posture of a terrified child was gone.

We sat on our new living room floor, eating takeout pizza from cardboard boxes.

“It’s so quiet here, Mom,” Valeria said, looking around the room. “No yelling. No walking on eggshells.”

“It’s going to stay this way,” I promised her, pouring her a glass of apple juice.

But our peace was shattered the next morning when Evelyn called me. Her voice was uncharacteristically tense.

“Marisol, I need you to be careful,” she said. “Hector’s family pooled their resources. They posted his bail. He was released from custody three hours ago.”

The pizza in my stomach turned to lead. “He’s out? How? He’s a danger to us!”

“The judge set a high bail, but his family took out a second mortgage on his mother’s house to pay it,” Evelyn explained. “He is wearing a GPS ankle monitor, and the restraining order is still in effect. If he comes within 500 feet of your new address, the police will be alerted immediately. But Hector is angry, Marisol. He feels cornered. Please, keep your doors locked and don't go out alone.”

That night, I didn't sleep.

Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of the wind against the windowpane made my heart leap into my throat. I sat on the living room couch, a heavy metal flashlight in my hand, staring at the front door until the sun began to peek through the blinds.

Hector was out there. And I knew him—he wouldn't let us go that easily. To him, our departure wasn't just a loss; it was a public humiliation. And Hector would do anything to protect his pride.
