Chapter 5 - THE EMBERGING TRUTH

The next morning, news of Ray Higgins's arrest hit Oakridge like a thunderbolt. The local newspaper, The Oakridge Chronicle, broke its long-standing silence and published a front-page article detailing the allegations against Richard Vance, complete with photos of the damaged diner and the Guardians' escort of Ethan Miller.

The public tide had completely turned. Parents who had been terrified to speak out against Richard Vance's influence were now organizing a rally outside the school board headquarters.

In a temporary safehouse provided by the Guardians—a cozy cabin nestled in the pine hills outside town—Sarah sat at a kitchen table, drinking coffee with Ethan. For the first time in months, Ethan looked relaxed. He was sitting by the window, drawing a picture of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with iron wings on the back.

The front door opened, and Marcus stepped inside, carrying a cardboard box full of fresh pastries and a thick manila folder.

"Good morning, family," Marcus smiled, placing the pastries on the table.

Ethan jumped up. "Marcus! Did you see the news? My teacher called Mom and said Tyler isn't in school today!"

"I know, buddy," Marcus said, patting Ethan’s head. "Tyler’s taking a long break. And things are moving fast."

Sarah looked up, her expression cautious. "Marcus... what's in the folder?"

Marcus sat down across from her, his face turning serious. "Sarah, while Brenda was working with the Sheriff on the criminal charges against Vance, our legal team started digging into your financial situation—specifically your housing situation and the debt your ex-husband left behind."

Sarah sighed, lowering her eyes. "I know it's a mess. Arthur Pendelton—my landlord—sent me a formal eviction notice this morning via text. He said I have three days to clear out."

Marcus opened the folder and pulled out a stack of documents bearing official court seals. "Arthur Pendelton can't evict you, Sarah."

Sarah blinked. "What? Why not?"

"Because Arthur Pendelton doesn't own your house," Marcus revealed, a small smile playing on his lips. "And he never did."

Sarah froze. "What are you talking about? I've been paying him seven hundred dollars a month in cash for three years!"

"Three years ago, when your ex-husband abandoned you, he signed a secret quitclaim deed transferring the property to Richard Vance to settle a gambling debt," Marcus explained, pointing to the land registry documents. "Vance used Arthur Pendelton as a strawman landlord to collect rent from you illegally while keeping the house off the county tax records. Vance was laundering your rent money through his body shop!"

Sarah’s mouth fell open in utter disbelief. "He... he was stealing from me? All this time?"

"Not just stealing," Brenda added, entering the cabin behind Marcus. "He was committing federal tax fraud and real estate fraud. Our attorneys filed an emergency injunction with the State Superior Court an hour ago. Not only is your eviction canceled, but the court has frozen all of Vance's local real estate holdings pending a full audit."

Sarah covered her mouth, tears of overwhelming relief streaming down her cheeks. "I don't... I don't know what to say. I thought we were going to be on the street..."

Ethan ran over and hugged his mother tight. "We're not going anywhere, Mom! Marcus promised!"

"That's right, Ethan," Marcus said softly. "But we're not done yet. Richard Vance's lawyers just posted his bail. He's out of jail, and he's holding an emergency press conference at Town Hall at two o'clock to claim he's the victim of a political witch hunt."

Sarah looked panicked again. "A press conference? He'll manipulate the story! He always does!"

Marcus stood up, his jaw hard as granite. "Not this time. Because at two o'clock, we're attending that press conference. And Ethan is going to tell the world his story."

Ethan looked up at Marcus, his young eyes suddenly burning with determination. "I want to do it, Mom. I'm not scared of him anymore."

Sarah looked at her son, seeing for the first time the transformation that had taken place over the last forty-eight hours. The timid, broken boy who hid his bruises on Route 12 was gone. In his place stood a boy who knew he had an army behind him.

Sarah nodded, wiping her tears, a fierce pride filling her chest. "Then we go together."
