Chapter 9 - The Power of the Foundation

The Hayes estate was quiet when Matthew arrived, the rain having settled into a gray, misty fog that hovered over the lawn. He walked through the front doors, finding Olivia sitting at the kitchen island, a cup of tea between her hands, her face pale as she looked up from her laptop.

"Matthew," she said, her voice shaking slightly as she stood up. "I saw the news alerts on the financial networks. They’re saying... they’re saying the board has suspended you. They’re calling me your... they’re saying terrible things about us."

Matthew walked over to her, his movements calm and deliberate. He didn't hesitate; he reached out, his large hands gently capturing her shoulders, anchoring her against the panic.

"Let them say whatever they want, Olivia," Matthew said, his storm-gray eyes locking onto hers with a profound, unbreakable intensity. "Julian Thorne thinks he’s trapped me with a corporate injunction. He thinks because he has the board’s signatures, he controls the Hayes Group. But he’s a bureaucrat. He doesn't understand architecture."

"What are you going to do?" she whispered, her hands reaching up to press against his chest.

"I’m going to do what my father taught me to do when a building is unstable," Matthew said, a cold, triumphant smile spreading across his face. "I’m going to remove the load-bearing pillars."

He pulled his personal phone from his pocket and dialed a ten-digit number that bypassed the corporate switchboards entirely.

"Arthur," Matthew said when his legal counsel answered the line. "I know you signed the injunction, Arthur. Don't apologize. I know Julian forced your hand with the board. But I want you to listen to me very carefully. Who holds the primary land titles for the harbor sector? Not the development rights—the actual physical land titles."

There was a long silence on the other end of the line, followed by the sound of furious typing.

"Oh, God," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a sudden, overwhelming realization. "The land titles aren't held by the Hayes Group. They’re held by the Hayes Family Trust. The trust that was established by your grandfather... the one that requires your personal, individual signature to transfer or sell."

"Exactly," Matthew said quietly. "Julian Thorne thinks he can start the demolition tomorrow morning because he has the development permits. But without the land titles, he’s trespassing on private property. I want you to file an immediate federal injunction against the Hayes Group on behalf of the Hayes Family Trust. We freeze the entire sector. We stop the bulldozers before they even turn on their engines."

"Matthew, if you do this, the company's stock price will drop by twenty percent by noon," Arthur warned. "The investors will panic."

"Let them panic," Matthew said. "And tell Julian Thorne that if he wants to see the land titles, he can meet me at the old harbor tomorrow morning at sunrise. In front of the demolition crews."

He hung up the phone and looked down at Olivia, his hands sliding down to clasp hers. "Noah and Grace are going to see The Sarah Jane tomorrow, Olivia. And they’re going to see their father protect it."
