Chapter 9 - The Battle of Maple Street

"Stay in the vehicle, Clara! That's an order!" Detective Vance shouted, drawing his Glock 19 as he kicked his door open and rushed toward the porch.

I couldn't just sit there. I grabbed a heavy iron flashlight from the glove compartment and followed him up the walkway, hiding behind the heavy stone pillars of the front porch.

Inside the living room, total chaos had erupted.

Two heavily armed syndicate thugs lay unconscious on the hardwood floor, their weapons scattered across the rug. Boone had taken them down the moment they breached the door.

In the center of the room, near the fireplace, stood Vance 'The Hammer' Miller—a massive, cruel-looking man with a scarred neck, wearing a heavy leather coat. He was holding a high-caliber revolver, pointing it directly at Maya, who was cornered near the kitchen door, clutching Baby Girl Parker frantically against her chest.

Boone stood between Miller and Maya.

He was bleeding from a deep cut above his left eyebrow, his green shirt torn, but his posture was absolute granite. He was holding a heavy steel fire poker in his right hand.

"You ruined my operation, Mercer," Miller snarled, his finger tightening over the trigger of his revolver. "Your junkie daughter stole my ledger, and you burned down my facility. I'm taking the baby, and I'm putting a bullet in both of your heads."

"Police! Drop the weapon!" Detective Vance yelled, stepping into the doorway with his firearm raised, aiming square at Miller’s chest.

Miller didn't drop his gun. He grinned, a dark, psychotic smile, and spun around, aiming his revolver straight at Detective Vance’s head.

BANG!

A gunshot exploded through the living room.

Detective Vance dropped to one knee, taking a bullet to his shoulder, his gun clattering onto the floorboards.

"Vance!" I screamed from the hallway.

Miller turned back toward Maya, raising his revolver again to eliminate the remaining witnesses. "End of the line, sweetheart—"

Boone didn't scream. He didn't hesitate.

With terrifying combat speed, Boone hurled the steel fire poker like a spear.

The heavy iron tip struck Miller square in the chest, breaking his collarbone with a loud SNAP. Miller let out a agonizing shriek, dropping his revolver onto the rug.

Before Miller could recover, Boone closed the distance like a leaping predator. He grabbed Miller by his leather lapels, lifted the two-hundred-pound mobster completely off his feet, and slammed him violently backward through the glass patio doors.

Shattered glass rained down over the backyard deck as Miller crashed onto the outdoor furniture, completely unconscious, his face covered in blood.

Boone stood in the ruined doorway, breathing heavily, rain pouring down over his face as he wiped the blood from his brow.

Sirens wailed in the distance as three patrol cars pulled up to the curb, their lights flashing red and blue through the broken windows. Police officers rushed up the porch, securing the scene and handcuffing Miller and his fallen crew.

I rushed into the room, kneeling beside Detective Vance, using my scarf to apply pressure to his shoulder wound. "Hold still, Marcus! The medics are right behind us!"

"I'm fine... check on the baby..." Vance groaned, gritting his teeth through the pain.

I turned around.

Maya was sitting on the floor in the corner, shaking violently, tears streaming down her face. But her arms were wrapped securely around Baby Girl Parker.

The baby wasn't crying. She was fast asleep, tucked safely inside her pink blanket, completely unharmed by the chaos that had just unfolded around her.

Boone walked into the room, stepping over the broken glass. He dropped to his knees beside his daughter, wrapping his massive, blood-stained arms around both of them.

Maya leaned her head against his broad chest, sobbing with pure, overwhelming relief. "Dad... you saved us... you saved us again..."

May you like

Boone buried his face in her hair, his massive body trembling as he held his family close.

"That's my job, baby," Boone whispered, his voice trembling with deep, unshakeable love. "That's my job."
