Chapter 8 - The Storm in the Foothills

The interior of the abandoned meatpacking plant was a labyrinth of rusted overhead meat hooks, concrete corridors, and frozen industrial drains. The temperature inside was barely warmer than the storm outside, the wind whistling through the shattered high windows.
Leonard and Martin entered through a broken side door, their movements silent, their weapons raised.
The sound of a harsh, echoing slap reverberated through the empty space.
"Sign the damn paper, Viona!" Vance Miller’s voice boomed from the center of the main processing floor. "I don't have time for your artistic integrity! Your daughter is probably freezing in some ditch by now!"
"I won't..." a weak, painful female voice answered. "I won't let you use Arthur’s memory to steal... my daughter... she knows... she will find help..."
"Your daughter is seven!" Vance snarled. "Nobody is coming for you!"
Leonard stepped out from the shadows of a concrete pillar, his long wool coat trailing behind him.
"You're wrong, Vance," Leonard said.
Vance Miller spun around, his eyes widening in sheer panic as he saw the shadow king of Boulder standing in the dim light. He had a heavy, silver-plated revolver in his hand, aimed directly at a woman tied to a rusted metal chair.
Viona Calvani was a vision of bruised resilience. Her dark hair was matted with blood from a temple wound, her face pale and swollen, but her eyes—the exact same fierce, dark eyes as Nella’s—shone with an unbreakable spirit.
"L-Leonard!" Vance stammered, backing away, using Viona’s chair as a shield. "You... you shouldn't be here. Gabriel authorized this! He said it was corporate security!"
"Gabriel is currently sitting in a concrete basement in Denver, Vance," Leonard said, his voice calm, steady, and utterly terrifying. "And you are standing in my territory, holding a gun at a woman who deserves my protection."
"Stay back!" Vance screamed, his thumb pulling back the hammer of his revolver. "I’ll kill her! I swear to God, I’ll take her out before you can touch me!"
"Martin," Leonard said softly.
A deafening crack shattered the silence of the warehouse.
The high-caliber sniper round from Martin Pike’s rifle, positioned on the overhead catwalk, tore through Vance’s right hand, obliterating the revolver and sending him crashing to the floor in a spray of blood and shattered bone.
Vance screamed, clutching his ruined wrist as he rolled in the frozen dust.
Leonard did not look at him. He walked past the groveling enforcer and knelt beside Viona Calvani. He pulled a silver pocket knife from his pocket and cleanly sliced the heavy ropes binding her wrists.
"Who... who are you?" Viona whispered, her breath escaping her in weak, white puffs.
"My name is Leonard Kalin," he said, gently lifting her from the chair. "Your daughter, Nella, sent me. She is waiting for you at my home."

Viona’s eyes filled with tears, her head resting against his shoulder as her strength finally failed her. "Nella... she’s safe?"
"She is safe," Leonard said, lifting her into his arms. "And so are you."
