Chapter 4 - A Whisper in the Dark

As the weeks passed, Maya began to integrate into the quiet rhythm of the Cross mansion.

She began private tutoring with Ethan’s former nanny, demonstrating a sharp, hungry intellect that astonished her teachers. She absorbed books on history, science, and literature at an incredible speed, as if trying to make up for the three years of schooling she had lost on the streets.

However, the trauma of her past was not so easily erased.

On a cold Tuesday evening in December, a violent thunderstorm rolled across Boston. Lightning flashed brightly against the tall windows of the mansion, followed by a deafening clap of thunder that shook the glass panes.

Inside her room, Maya sat curled under her desk, her knees pulled tight against her chest, her fingers jammed into her ears to drown out the sound. In her mind, the thunder sounded like her uncle Richard breaking down her bedroom door, his heavy boots booming against the floorboards, shouting at her because she hadn't cleaned the floor fast enough.

The door to her bedroom opened softly.

Harrison stepped inside, holding a small silver tray with two mugs of hot chocolate. He saw the empty bed, glanced toward the desk, and spotted her small frame shivering in the shadow beneath the wood.

He didn't make a sudden move. He walked over slowly, set the tray on the coffee table, and sat down on the carpet five feet away from the desk.

"The storm is loud tonight," Harrison said softly, his voice calm and steady as an anchor.

Maya peeked out from behind her knees, her eyes wide with terror. "Is he coming?"

"Who?" Harrison asked gently.

"Richard," she whispered, the name tasting like poison on her tongue. "When the sky was loud like this in New York... he used to get angry. He said the rain was my fault."

Harrison felt a dark, lethal rage flare in his chest, but he kept his expression smooth and warm. He reached out his hand, palm up, leaving it on the floor between them.

"Richard is never going to touch you again, Maya," Harrison said, using her real name for the first time.

She froze upon hearing her name. "You... you know who I am?"

"I know your name," Harrison said softly. "Your father was Thomas. He loved you very much. And the man who hurt you is gone. I have made sure he will spend the rest of his life answering for what he did to you."

Tears welled up in Maya’s gray eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks. For months, she had been a ghost without a past, a ghost who belonged to no one. Hearing her name spoken with such protection and reverence shattered the last remaining wall around her heart.

She crawled out from beneath the desk, her small hands reaching for Harrison’s open palm.

May you like

Harrison pulled her into his broad chest, wrapping his arms around her thin shoulders, cradling her as she finally let go, sobbing uncontrollably against his shoulder.

"You're safe now, Maya," Harrison whispered, resting his jaw against her hair as the thunder crashed outside. "You have a home. You have a father. And nobody in this world is ever going to take you away from me."
