Chapter 4 - The Sit-Down at the Drake

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was bathed in the warm light of crystal chandeliers, yet the atmosphere inside was colder than a Chicago winter. Surrounding the massive mahogany table were the bosses of the five major families controlling the Midwest underworld.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Vale—a man in his sixties with slicked-back silver hair, tailored bespoke suits, and eyes as lifeless as a shark’s. Beside him stood Vanessa, wearing a velvet red dress, looking arrogant and untouchable.

"We have waited thirty minutes, Arthur," Boss Moretti of the North Side declared, crossing his heavy arms. "You claimed Julian Mercer was dead. You claimed his lieutenants surrendered. Yet here we are, sitting in neutral territory, listening to rumors that he cleared his mansion of your hit squad."

"Julian Mercer is a corpse, Moretti," Arthur Vale spat dismissively. "My daughter personally administered enough neurotoxin over six months to liquefy an elephant's central nervous system. If he isn't dead, he's a vegetable drooling in a wheelchair."

"Is that so, Arthur?"

The heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open.

The sound echoed through the vast hall like a thunderclap. Every bodyguard in the room instantly reached for their shoulder holsters, but twenty armed men in sleek black tactical gear flooded into the room first, securing every exit and balcony within three seconds flat.

Then, I walked in.

I was wearing a charcoal-grey tailored three-piece suit. My hair was styled, my face shaved, and my stride was steady, deliberate, and powerful. There was no limp. No tremble. No sign of the dying man who had been frozen beneath blankets four days ago.

Beside me walked Mateo and Dominic, both looking like apex predators hungry for blood.

Vanessa gasped, stepping back so fast her high heels nearly caught on the Persian rug. "Impossible... I saw the blood reports! You were dying!"

"I was, Vanessa," I said, my voice projecting across the silent ballroom, smooth and lethal. "But unfortunately for you, your poisoning skills are as sloppy as your loyalty."

Arthur Vale stood up slowly, his eyes narrowing to slits. "Julian. You always were a hard cockroach to kill."

"I don't die easily, Arthur. Especially not in my own city," I said, walking right up to the head of the table and pulling out the vacant leather chair opposite him. I sat down, leaning back comfortably, crossing my legs. "Gentlemen of the Commission. I called this emergency sit-down to report a violation of the Sacred Charter."

Boss Moretti leaned forward, thoroughly intrigued. "Speak, Mercer."

"Six months ago, the Vale family attempted an unsanctioned assassination of a sitting Commission member using chemical poisoning," I stated, placing a thick leather folder on the table. "Inside this folder are toxicology reports from three independent laboratories, hospital records signed by Dr. Harris, and audio recordings of Vanessa Vale admitting to the plot in my bedroom."

Vanessa’s face turned from red to ash white. "He's lying! Those are forged!"

"Furthermore," I continued, ignoring her screeching, "Arthur Vale attempted to bribe my second-in-command, Dominic, to seize my shipping ports without a vote from the Commission. That is high treason against the five families."

Arthur Vale laughed, a dry, bitter sound. "Treason? You think these old men care about rules, Julian? Power is taken, not requested! Look around you! I control ninety percent of the private security forces at O'Hare and the Port of Chicago. I have the Mayor in my pocket! What do you have? A handful of street loyalists and a child you hid on the South Side?"

My posture stiffened instantly. The temperature in the room seemed to plunge twenty degrees.

"What did you say?" I asked softly.

"Oh, did you think I didn't know?" Arthur sneered, pulling a photograph from his inner pocket and tossing it onto the table. It was a picture taken earlier that afternoon—a long-distance surveillance photo of Elena and Sofia entering a safehouse under Mateo's guard. "A sweet little girl. Looks just like you, Julian. It would be a terrible shame if something happened to her before this sit-down concluded."

A dead silence fell over the ballroom.

Even the other four family bosses looked uncomfortable. In the Chicago Outfit, wives and children were off-limits. Threatening a man's family in front of the Commission was a line that hadn't been crossed in fifty years.

"Arthur," Boss Moretti warned softly, "you're stepping off a cliff."

"I am taking this city!" Arthur roared, snapping his fingers.

Instantly, six of Arthur's personal bodyguards drew their weapons, aiming them at the other family bosses. "None of you leave this room until you sign over the territorial rights to the Vale Syndicate! Today, the old rules die!"

Vanessa smiled, her confidence returning. "You lost, Julian. You brought words to a gunfight."

I sat completely motionless. I didn't reach for a weapon. I didn't panic.

I simply raised my left hand and looked at my wrist watch.

"It's 12:15 a.m., Arthur," I said quietly.

"So what?" Arthur sneered.

"So, five minutes ago, my men, led by Dominic's loyal vanguard, raided your main compound in Lake Forest," I said calmly. "They neutralized your mercenaries, secured your financial servers, and liberated every ledger your family maintained."

Arthur's phone suddenly began ringing frantically in his pocket. He didn't answer it.

"And as for the picture of my daughter," I continued, standing up slowly, my power radiating through the vast hall, "that photo was taken by my own sniper, who was watching your photographer. Your hit squad at the safehouse is already at the bottom of the Chicago River."

Arthur's eyes widened in horror. He pulled out his phone, answered it, listened for three seconds, and dropped the device onto the floor.

"You... you destroyed my compound?" Arthur stammered.

"I didn't destroy it, Arthur. I bought it," I corrected. "Your bank accounts were frozen twenty minutes ago by the federal prosecutor using the evidence Elena Ramirez provided."

I looked at the other four bosses. "Commission members. The Vale family has broken every law of the Outfit. I request a formal vote for their absolute liquidation."

Boss Moretti raised his hand immediately. "Aye."

Boss Genovese raised his hand. "Aye."

The remaining two bosses raised their hands in unison. "Aye."

Arthur Vale backed away, his face pale with utter defeat. "Vanessa... get behind me!"

"No!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away from her own father. "It was his idea, Julian! He made me do it! He told me we had to control the Mercer empire!"

"You lied to me, you poisoned me, and you threatened my child," I said, walking toward them. "Mateo."

"Yes, Boss?"

"Take Arthur and Vanessa Vale to the docks," I ordered, turning my back on them. "Give them the standard exile sentence. Strip them of everything, lock them up, and ensure they never step foot in Illinois again."

"Julian! No! You can't do this to me!" Vanessa screamed as Mateo’s men dragged her and her father out of the ballroom, their desperate cries fading down the carpeted hallways.

I turned back to the remaining bosses, who all stood up, bowing their heads in deep respect.

"Chicago remains under the Mercer family," I stated. "Meeting adjourned."
