Chapter 4 - The Celebrity Medical Team

By the fifth month of my pregnancy, the news of my recovery, the criminal trial of Dr. Marcus Thorne, and the miraculous news of my twin pregnancy had caught the attention of the broader medical community.

Dr. Victoria Vance, recognizing the high-profile nature of my case and the need to ensure absolute, ironclad protection against any potential legal or medical interference from Julian’s remaining connections, brought in an elite, world-renowned clinical team to manage the remainder of my care.

The team was led by Dr. Aris Thorne—no relation to Marcus Thorne, a pioneer in high-risk maternal-fetal medicine from Johns Hopkins who had delivered children for European royalty and international celebrities. Joining him was Dr. Elena Rostova, the chief of pediatric cardiology at Boston Children's Hospital, and a private team of six specialized obstetrical nurses who were assigned exclusively to my file.

They did not operate out of a public clinic.

To ensure my privacy and peace of mind, Garrison had repurposed the second floor of the farmhouse, working alongside local carpenters to construct a state-of-the-art, private medical suite equipped with high-definition 4D ultrasound machinery, continuous fetal monitoring systems, and a direct satellite link to Dr. Aris Thorne’s office in Baltimore.

"This isn't just a pregnancy, Maya," Dr. Aris Thorne said during his first home visit to Cedar Hollow in late April, examining the glowing 4D ultrasound scans displaying two perfectly formed, active baby boys resting comfortably in my womb. "This is a triumph of human resilience over systemic medical corruption. You are carrying two healthy, robust boys. Their heart rates are 145 and 152 beats per minute. Their growth trajectories are in the ninety-fifth percentile."

I lay on the comfortable examination couch, my hands resting over my rounded, heavy bump. Garrison stood beside me, watching the monitor with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe as the screen showed the tiny face of Baby A resting his small hand over the face of Baby B.

"They're moving a lot today," I laughed, feeling a series of strong, rhythmic kicks against my ribs.

"They're Blackwoods," Garrison said softly, a proud, warm grin lighting up his face. "They’re getting ready to take on the world."

While my health flourished in the mountain peace of Cedar Hollow, the final legal collapse of Julian Vance reached its dramatic climax in the Suffolk Superior Court.

The criminal trial of Julian Vance, Evelyn Vance, and Dr. Marcus Thorne lasted six days.

Chloe, taking the stand as the state’s star witness, presented thirty hours of recorded phone conversations, financial spreadsheets, and internal clinic emails that detailed every aspect of the conspiracy.

She testified how Julian had laughed at my tears after my third surgery, telling her over dinner at O Ya in Boston that "Maya is so gullible she’d sign her own execution order if I handed her a pen and told her it was a consent form for vitamins."

She testified how Dr. Marcus Thorne had deliberately used contaminated saline solutions to cause painful pelvic inflammation, ensuring I would remain bedridden and compliant while Julian executed the legal transfers for the Marlborough land.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

The verdicts were unanimous and devastating:

Dr. Marcus Thorne: Guilty on forty-two counts of medical malpractice, grand larceny, insurance fraud, and aggravated assault under the guise of medical treatment. Sentence: 35 to 50 years in state prison, immediate revocation of medical license, and $18 million in civil restitution.

Evelyn Vance: Guilty on twelve counts of corporate embezzlement, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit fraud. Sentence: 12 to 15 years in state prison, forfeiture of all personal real estate holdings.

Julian Vance: Guilty on twenty-eight counts of grand larceny, corporate fraud, tax evasion, forged legal instruments, and conspiracy to commit medical assault. Sentence: 25 to 30 years in state prison without eligibility for parole for twenty years, full forfeiture of all corporate assets, and a lifetime permanent restraining order protecting Maya Linwood and her children.

When the judge pronounced the sentences, Julian collapsed at the defense table, weeping uncontrollably, screaming that his life was over, begging his mother to help him as court officers hauled him toward the rear exit in heavy chains.

Sitting in the third row of the gallery, dressed in a simple cream silk blouse that showed her round, radiant baby bump, sat Maya Linwood.

Beside her sat Garrison Blackwood, his arm draped protectively around her shoulders, his presence steady and immovable.

As Julian was led past our row, his tear-streaked face turned toward us. His eyes fell on my rounded stomach, then on Garrison, then on the diamond engagement ring that Garrison had placed on my finger three weeks earlier—a simple, stunning vintage ring that had belonged to his grandmother.

Julian stopped, his breath hitching, a look of profound, sickening comprehension dawning in his eyes.

He had thought I was broken. He had thought I was barren. He had thought I was a "bad investment."

And now, sitting before him, was the woman he had abandoned—radiant, healthy, carrying twin sons, loved by a man ten times the human being Julian could ever dream of being, standing on top of a $14 million legacy that was completely beyond his reach.

"Maya..." Julian choked out, a pathetic, desperate whisper escaping his lips as the guards yanked his arm. "Maya... please..."

I did not speak. I did not glare.

I simply rested my hand over my twins, turned my face toward Garrison, and smiled as the heavy steel doors of the courtroom closed behind Julian Vance forever.
