Chapter 7 - The Day of Judgment

The county courthouse was oppressive, filled with the sharp smell of floor wax and old oak paneling.

I arrived in a sleek black suit, using a single polished wooden cane instead of crutches, walking with a slow, deliberate stride that hid the burning pain in my hip. Behind me walked Daniel, three junior associates carrying mountain-high stacks of legal binders, and a team of expert witnesses including my orthopedic surgeon, my psychological evaluator, and the hospital social worker.

On the other side of the courtroom sat my family.

My mother looked ten years older, wearing a faded dress she had managed to keep, her hair unstyled. My father looked broken, sitting with his shoulders slumped. Claire sat beside her cheap, sleazy attorney, wearing an ill-fitting suit, trying to look confident while avoiding my gaze.

"Case number 24-FC-8921: Petition for Emergency Temporary Guardianship of Noah and Lily Vance," Judge Miller announced, looking down over her half-moon spectacles at the courtroom.

Claire’s attorney stood up, cleared his throat, and launched into a theatrical speech.

"Your Honor," he began, waving his arms. "We are here today to protect two defenseless infant children. The mother, Mrs. Mara Vance, has suffered immense physical and psychological trauma. She is currently bound to a wheelchair, heavily medicated on narcotics, and has displayed extreme paranoid behavior by isolating herself and firing her entire supporting family structure! My clients, the loving grandparents and aunt, are simply asking to step in and provide a stable home environment until Mrs. Vance recovers her sanity!"

Judge Miller didn't look impressed. She looked at the attorney, then turned her gaze to Daniel.

"Mr. Cho, your response?"

Daniel stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket.

"Your Honor, this petition is a fraudulent, retaliatory extortion scheme," Daniel stated clearly. "We have three expert witnesses prepared to testify today. First, Dr. Robert Sterling, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Vanderbilt, who will confirm that Mrs. Vance is fully mobile, off all narcotic pain medications as of ten days ago, and physically capable of performing all maternal duties."

Daniel turned a page of his brief.

"Second, Dr. Aris Thorne, a court-certified child psychologist, who completed a full home evaluation yesterday and declared the children to be in optimal physical, emotional, and developmental health. And third, Sarah Jenkins, the hospital social worker who was present when the petitioner, Helen Vance, explicitly refused to care for the infants while Mrs. Vance was in emergency surgery, citing a conflict with her recreational pickleball schedule."

The courtroom went completely still.

Judge Miller’s eyes narrowed sharply. "Did I hear you correctly, Mr. Cho? The petitioner refused emergency care of the infants?"

"We have the certified, unedited audio recording of that call, Your Honor," Daniel said, offering a flash drive to the bailiff. "Along with financial records showing that the petitioners have stolen over $200,000 from corporate accounts tied to Mrs. Vance, for which criminal indictments are currently pending with the District Attorney's office."

Claire’s attorney went pale. He turned to glare at Claire, whispering furiously, realizing he had been completely lied to by his own clients regarding the facts of the case.
