Chapter 3 - The Ice Breaks

The red and blue emergency lights flashed violently against the swirling white canvas of the blizzard outside. Heavy-duty police SUVs and a massive track-driven paramedic vehicle roared up the unplowed driveway, crushing through three feet of snow.
The front door was thrown open. Four state troopers marched into the foyer, guns unholstered at low-ready, followed immediately by three paramedics carrying trauma bags and heating equipment. Behind them walked Major Rebecca Hayes, wearing her crisp military dress uniform under an army trench coat, flanked by two armed Military Police officers.
“State Police! Nobody move!” the lead officer commanded, his voice cutting through the tense atmosphere.
Walter immediately rushed toward the police, putting on his best act of a desperate, frightened older patriarch. He threw his hands up, pointing frantically at Jake.
“Officer! Thank God you’re here!” Walter yelled, his voice shaking with fake terror. “My son has lost his mind! He’s suffered a psychotic break from his military service! He broke into my home, attacked my youngest son, and locked us in! Look at Logan’s throat! He assaulted him!”
Patricia scurried behind Walter, tears bursting from her eyes on command. “He’s dangerous! He threatened to murder us! Please, arrest him! Protect us!”
The lead trooper looked at Jake, then at Major Rebecca Hayes, who stepped forward instantly with an authoritative aura that commanded the room.
“Trooper,” Rebecca said calmly, pulling a laminated federal warrant from her chest pocket. “I am Major Rebecca Hayes, United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. This property is under federal investigation. Sergeant Jake Vance is an active-duty Special Reconnaissance operative. We are executing an emergency federal seizure warrant based on active military fraud, grand larceny, and attempted murder of a military dependent.”
The lead trooper paused, looking at the federal seal on the document, then back at Walter. “Attempted murder?”
“Paramedics, upstairs! Master bedroom!” Jake commanded, ignoring his parents completely. “My wife and six-month-old son were locked outside in sub-zero temperatures for over two hours. Hypothermia stage two.”
The paramedics didn’t wait. They rushed past Walter and sprinted up the stairs with their equipment.
Walter’s face turned purple with rage. “This is outrageous! This is MY house! I have the legal deed!” He held up the folder. “Look at this! It’s notarized by the county!”
Rebecca looked at Walter as if he were a bug under a microscope. “Mr. Vance, we have already executed a raid on Notary Public Arthur Pendelton’s office twenty minutes ago. Under federal interrogation, Mr. Pendelton admitted to taking a ten-thousand-dollar bribe from you to forge Sergeant Vance’s signature on land transfers, bank authorizations, and custody waivers while Sergeant Vance was on classified deployment.”
Walter’s breath hitched. He staggered back a step, slamming his back against the wall.
“Furthermore,” Rebecca continued smoothly, holding up a tablet, “we have pulled the biometric server logs. The county clerk who processed your fake deed has just been detained for official misconduct and conspiracy. Your paper trail didn’t just fail, Mr. Vance—it lit up our federal surveillance grid like a Christmas tree.”
Patricia began to panic. She tugged frantically at Walter’s arm. “Walter! Do something! Tell them it’s a mistake! Tell them!”
“Quiet, Patricia!” Walter snapped, his composure crumbling rapidly.
Jake walked toward his mother. His shadow engulfed her. “Take off the robe, Patricia.”
“Jake, please! I’m your mother!” she sobbed, clutching the cashmere fabric. “I did this for the family! We were going broke! Your father’s business owed millions to investors! If we didn’t get capital, we were going to lose everything! We were going to go to prison! We did it to protect the family name!”
“You sacrificed my wife and child to save your own skin,” Jake said, his voice devoid of any human warmth. “You are not my family. You are a predator.”
Jake reached out, grabbed the collar of the robe, and unzipped it, stripping it off her shoulders in one swift motion, leaving her standing in her undergarments in the freezing foyer. He tossed the robe onto the clean counter away from her.
“Trooper,” Jake said to the officer. “Take them.”
“Wait!” Logan screamed from the top of the stairs, coming down on his knees with his hands raised. “I didn’t know! I swear I didn’t know they locked her out! Dad told me Hannah agreed to leave! He told me she signed the custody papers voluntarily! I just wanted a place to stay! Don’t arrest me!”
“You sat on my couch and laughed while she froze,” Jake said, staring down his brother. “You drank my liquor while my son’s lungs were filling with icy air. You’re just as guilty.”
The troopers moved in with handcuffs clicking open.
“Walter Vance, Patricia Vance, Logan Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand theft, forgery, felony child endangerment, and attempted reckless homicide,” the lead trooper announced, pinning Walter against the wall and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists.
“You can’t do this to me!” Walter screamed, thrashing against the police grip. “I am Walter Vance! I built this town! I will sue every single one of you! Jake, you ungrateful bastard! You’d throw your own father in jail for that worthless girl? She’s a nobody! You hear me? A NOBODY!”
Jake didn’t even look back as the troopers dragged his screaming parents and weeping brother out into the freezing storm, loading them into the back of the police cruisers.
Upstairs, the paramedic walked out of the bedroom, smiling warmly at Jake.
“Sergeant? She’s stable. The baby’s core temperature is rising, and his lungs are clear. They’re going to be okay. But they need to go to the hospital for observation.”
Jake felt a colossal weight lift off his chest. Tears finally welled in his eyes, hot and fast. He nodded, wiping his face. “Thank you.”
He walked back into the bedroom. Hannah was sitting on the edge of the bed, wrapped in warm hospital blankets, holding Owen close to her chest. Owen was softly cooing, his tiny cheeks flushed with pink warmth again.
Hannah looked up at Jake, her eyes filled with unspeakable relief.
“They’re gone, Hannah,” Jake whispered, kneeling before her and taking her into his arms. “They’re never coming back. I swear to God, they will never touch our life again.”
Hannah rested her head against his shoulder, weeping silently. “I thought I was going to lose him, Jake. I tried to cover him with everything I had... the snow was so heavy...”

“Shh... I’m here now,” Jake held them tight. “The storm is over.”
But as Jake looked out the window watching the police cruisers drive away into the night, he knew this was only the first battle. Walter’s financial web went deep, and the men Walter owed money to were about to come looking for what they were promised.
