Chapter 5 - The Grand Dinner of Betrayal

Friday evening arrived with a grand, theatrical flair.

The two-story house on Elmwood Lane was illuminated like a palace. White string lights draped across the gold-painted iron gate, a high-end catering team moved bustlingly through the kitchen, and a professional bartender served top-shelf cocktails to over twenty-five affluent guests gathered in the open-concept living room.

Margaret was wearing a floor-length red velvet gown, her fingers shimmering with expensive diamond rings, while Paige strutted around in a gold cocktail dress, showing off pictures of the Miami condo she claimed she was purchasing the following morning.

"Thank you all for coming!" Margaret announced loudly, raising her crystal champagne flute as the guests gathered around the grand marble dining table. "Tonight is a monumental night for the Miller family! As many of you know, my brilliant son Gavin has returned from his executive term in Canada, and tonight, his corporate entity is officially releasing our family's million-dollar financial payout!"

The guests clapped enthusiastically, sipping their drinks and murmuring praises.

"Where is Gavin, Margaret?" asked Mr. Henderson, a local bank director. "We're all eager to congratulate the young man!"

"Oh, he's just finishing up with our family attorney upstairs!" Paige giggled, waving her hand dismissively. "They're printing out the certified payout checks right now!"

Right on cue, the heavy oak double doors at the main entrance clicked open.

I walked into the foyer, dressed in a crisp, tailored black suit. Walking beside me was Attorney Arthur Pendelton, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

Behind us, stepping quietly through the doorway, was Gwen.

She was wearing an elegant, simple emerald-green silk dress that draped softly over her petite frame. Though she was still thin, her skin had regained a healthy, warm glow thanks to four days of intense medical care and nutrition at St. Jude’s. She wore a beautifully styled, high-end dark wig that matched her natural hair perfectly, and her head was held high, her eyes clear, calm, and entirely devoid of fear.

The room fell instantly silent.

Margaret’s champagne glass wobbled in her hand. Her face flushed with a mixture of shock and intense irritation as she stared at Gwen.

"What... what is she doing here?" Paige spat out, her voice dropping into a harsh whisper as she stepped toward me. "Gavin, why did you bring her here in front of our guests? And where did she get that dress and that wig?"

"Gwen belongs here, Paige," I said clearly, my voice carrying into every corner of the crowded room. "In fact, she belongs here more than anyone else in this house."

Margaret forced a quick, fake laugh, turning to her guests with a nervous wave of her hand. "Oh, please excuse my son’s playful nature! Gwen has been recovering from a mild illness, but tonight is about our family triumph! Gavin, please, tell Attorney Pendelton to present the payout checks!"

I stepped toward the head of the long dining table, resting my hands flat on the polished mahogany wood.

"Of course, Mom," I said smoothly. "Arthur, please open the briefcase and present the final financial summary to the room."
