Chapter 7 - Paper Trails and Shattered Glass

The arrest for violating the protection order changed the entire landscape of our legal battle.

The next morning, Sarah Jenkins called me into her office. She had a massive stack of financial documents on her desk, along with a copy of the police arrest record from the night before.

"Daniel’s lawyer is panic-stricken, Clara," Sarah said, her eyes shining with professional triumph. "Your husband spent the night in the Delaware County Jail. He was arraigned this morning for misdemeanor violation of a protective order. The judge set his bail high and ordered him to surrender his passport."

"But look at this," Sarah continued, sliding a folder across the desk toward me. "Since his arrest, the court granted us full, unrestricted access to his financial records through emergency discovery. We had a forensic accountant look through his personal and business accounts over the last forty-eight hours. Daniel hasn't just been hiding money from you, Clara. He’s been hiding it from the government."

I looked at the spreadsheets. They were a maze of numbers, but Sarah pointed to several large transactions originating from Daniel's firm's trust accounts into an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands.

"What is this?" I asked.

"It’s embezzlement, Clara," Sarah said quietly. "He’s been skimming from his firm's client accounts for the last three years, funneling the money into a private account to prepare for a divorce. He was planning to leave you with nothing, claiming he was broke, and then slip away with over a million dollars once the custody battle was over."

The sheer scale of his deception made me dizzy. The man I had shared a bed with, the man who had hit me for "provoking" him over late bills, had been systematically stealing millions while accusing me of being careless with our grocery money.

"What happens now?" I asked.

"We are going to file for an emergency hearing in the divorce court," Sarah said. "With the evidence of domestic violence, the TPO violation, his arrest, and now this financial fraud, we have everything we need to secure a permanent sole custody order for Leo, the marital home, and a massive portion of his assets as a settlement before the federal prosecutors get their hands on him."

"Federal prosecutors?"

"Oh, yes," Sarah smiled, a cold, elegant expression. "I've already contacted the IRS and the district attorney. Daniel’s firm is going to be audited by Monday morning. His partner at the firm is cooperating. Daniel’s career is over, Clara. He’s looking at federal prison time."

I sat back in my chair, looking out the window at the brick houses of German Village.

I had spent years believing I was weak, believing I had to bear his blows and his insults to keep our family alive. But the truth was, Daniel was the weak one. He was a house of cards built on lies, theft, and fear.

It had only taken one quiet night, one sent message, to bring the whole structure crashing down.
