Chapter 3 - The Public Announcement

The grand ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel was bathed in soft amber light. It was the annual West Coast Venture Capital Gala, an event where the elite of Los Angeles finance gathered to flash their wealth and toast to their multi-million-dollar acquisitions.
Adrian Vale stood near the center ice sculpture, a glass of vintage champagne in his hand, his arm wrapped tightly around Celeste Monroe’s waist. Celeste was radiant in a plunging scarlet silk gown, her black Birkin bag placed conspicuously on the high-top table behind her like a centerpiece.
"Adrian, darling, the reporters from The LA Business Journal are over by the step-and-repeat," Celeste whispered into his ear, her red nails stroking his lapel. "Should we make the announcement now? The press release about our new luxury development fund is already scheduled to hit the wires at midnight."
Adrian smiled, his chest swelling with a profound sense of triumph. He had successfully discarded his baggage—the sick, exhausted wife who had bloated herself with triplets—and replaced her with a glamorous, high-society partner who would elevate his brand to the billionaires' circle.
"Let's do it, sweetheart," Adrian said, guiding her toward the press wall.
Within minutes, a small crowd of entertainment and business reporters gathered around them, their cameras flashing rapidly.
"Mr. Vale! Is it true that Vale Investment Group is launching a three-hundred-million-dollar real estate portfolio with Monroe Luxury Assets?" a reporter asked, holding up a digital recorder.
"It is absolutely true," Adrian announced, his voice projecting across the ballroom with effortless confidence. "We are entering a new era of lifestyle investing. And I am proud to say that Celeste Monroe will not only be the managing director of this new fund, but she will also be joining me as my partner in life. We are officially engaged, and we will be establishing our primary residence at our new estate in Pasadena."
"And what about your wife, Evelyn?" another reporter chimed in, checking her notes. "There were rumors she recently gave birth to triplets at St. Jude’s."
Adrian’s expression shifted seamlessly into a look of heavy, rehearsed sorrow. "Unfortunately, my former wife and I grew apart during the pregnancy. We have reached an amicable, private separation agreement. I have provided for her generously, but she preferred a quiet life away from the public eye. The children will remain under a shared custody arrangement, though their primary residence will be with me and Celeste where they can have access to the best resources."
Celeste stepped closer to the microphone, her smile dazzling. "We are just so excited to create a modern, beautiful family environment for the boys. Adrian is such a visionary leader—"
"Mr. Vale!"
A loud, authoritative voice interrupted Celeste mid-sentence. A man in a sharp grey suit pushed through the crowd of reporters. It was Mr. Davies, the senior vice president of commercial risk from Vanguard Commercial Bank. Behind him stood two men carrying legal portfolios.
Adrian’s smile faltered for a microsecond before he extended a hand. "Davies! Good evening. Are you here to celebrate the new fund? Vanguard’s secondary credit facility is going to be a major pillar—"
"Mr. Vale, I am not here to celebrate," Davies said, his voice cold and entirely public, carrying across the immediate circle of investors who had stopped talking to watch the interaction. "At 5:00 p.m. today, the compliance committee at Vanguard Commercial Bank issued a declaration of material breach against Vale Investment Group."
The ballroom went dead silent. The flash of the cameras changed from lifestyle reporting to hard investigative journalism.
"A... a breach?" Adrian stammered, his hand tightening around his champagne glass until his knuckles went white. "That’s impossible. Our interest payments are fully automated—"
"The breach does not concern interest, Mr. Vale," Davies stated, pulling a formal legal notice from his portfolio and handing it directly to Adrian in front of the flashing cameras. "Our forensic auditing division has identified an unauthorized capital diversion of forty-two million dollars from your primary liquidity pool into a shell entity named VIG Holdings, which was subsequently used to purchase personal real estate. Under Section 9 of our commercial credit agreement, this constitutes immediate corporate fraud."
Celeste’s eyes widened in horror. She instinctively reached for her Birkin bag, as if she could hide her assets inside it. "Adrian... what is he talking about?"

"Vanguard Commercial Bank has officially frozen all operational accounts associated with Vale Investment Group effective immediately," Davies continued ruthlessly. "We are demanding the full acceleration and repayment of the seven-hundred-million-dollar credit facility within forty-eight hours. If the funds are not returned, Vanguard will initiate involuntary bankruptcy proceedings against your firm at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning."
Adrian’s face drained of all color. The glass of champagne slipped from his fingers, shattering loudly on the marble floor of the ballroom—an exact echo of the confidence he had displayed in my hospital room just two days prior.
