Chapter 5 - The Desperate Dog

For the past twenty-four hours, Carter Vance had been living in a waking nightmare.
He sat in his messy, cramped living room in the small San Diego apartment he had shared with Abigail. The room smelled of stale coffee and sweat. Pizza boxes were stacked on the counter, and the sink was filled with dirty dishes—dishes Abigail used to wash quietly while he sat on the couch playing video games or bragging on the phone to his friends.
His laptop was open on the coffee table, flashing red notifications every three seconds.
VANCE INNOVATION STOCK: UNTRADED / SUSPENDED. BANK OF AMERICA ACCOUNT: FROZEN PENDING LEGAL INQUIRY. CREDIT CARD STATUS: DECLINED.
"Pick up, damn it! Pick up!" Carter screamed into his phone, holding it to his ear with a trembling hand.
He was calling Vanessa for the thirty-seventh time.
Finally, the line clicked open.
"Vanessa!" Carter cried out, practically sobbing into the receiver. "Vanessa, thank God! You have to talk to your father! My corporate accounts have been locked! My landlord just called and said my office lease is being terminated for lease violations! What is happening?!"
"Don't ever call this number again, you pathetic loser," Vanessa’s voice came through the speaker, cold, furious, and sharp as a razor.
"Vanessa, please!" Carter begged, tears spilling over his cheeks. "We can fight this! If we go to the media, if we tell them that billionaire Abigail Whitaker abandoned her husband and ruined a small startup, the public will destroy her!"
Vanessa laughed—a high, mocking sound that cut through Carter like a knife.
"Are you completely stupid?" Vanessa asked. "Do you think the press gives a damn about a small-time scammer who dumped his wife thirty minutes after she had triplets? The story broke two hours ago on Bloomberg, Carter. The entire world knows what you did."
Carter felt his stomach drop into a bottomless pit. "What... what story?"
"Look at the news, you idiot," Vanessa spat. "Abigail’s legal team released a statement. They published the divorce agreement you gave her. They published the time stamp showing you served her thirty minutes after delivery while she was still bleeding in bed!"
Carter frantically opened a new tab on his laptop.
Across every major news portal—Forbes, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch—were massive, bold headlines:
WHITAKER HEIR FOUND: BILLIONAIRE ABIGAIL WHITAKER SURVIVES TRIPLETS DELIVERY, REJECTS PREDATORY DIVORCE FROM STARTUP FOUNDER.
CARTER VANCE: THE MOST HATED MAN IN TECH.
Below the headlines were thousands of comments, retweets, and viral videos. Carter’s personal phone number, his office address, and his social media handles had been leaked. Millions of people across the globe were calling for a complete boycott of Vance Innovation.
"My father’s board just fired him," Vanessa added, her voice dropping into a hateful whisper. "Harrison Langford was ousted as CEO of Langford Capital thirty minutes ago because Apex Financial bought out our primary shareholders. We are broke, Carter. Because of you."
"Vanessa, no—"
"If I ever see your face again," she hissed, "I will hire someone to throw you into the bay. Go to hell, Carter."
The line went dead.
Carter dropped the phone onto the rug. He sat on the edge of the sofa, clutching his head in his hands, gasping for air.
His phone began to ring again.
He snatched it up, hoping against hope that it was a lawyer, an investor, anyone who could offer a lifeline.
"Hello?!"
"Mr. Carter Vance?" a stern, professional male voice asked.
"Yes! Yes, this is Carter!"
"This is Horizon Capital. We are calling to inform you that effective 9:00 AM today, your four-million-dollar technology loan has been transferred to our new parent company, Whitaker Global Risk Management. Under Clause 14-B of your contract, an immediate acceleration demand has been executed due to severe brand damage and insolvency."
"No... no, please!" Carter cried, falling off the sofa onto his knees. "I don't have four million dollars! The technology isn't even fully launched!"
"You have forty-eight hours to deliver full payment of four million, two hundred thousand dollars including accrued interest," the caller stated calmly. "Failure to comply will result in immediate seizure of all Vance Innovation intellectual property, physical assets, and personal liquid reserves. Have a good day, Mr. Vance."
CLICK.
Carter laid on the carpet, staring at the ceiling of the tiny apartment he had spent five years complaining about.
He remembered Abigail sitting at the small kitchen table, editing manuscripts under a dim lamp until two in the morning, her stomach swollen with his children, smiling at him when he walked in and saying, "Don't worry, honey. We’ll make it. I believe in you."
She hadn't been a broke orphan.
She had been a queen sitting in the dirt with him, waiting to see if he was worthy of her crown.

And he had thrown her away for a silk jumpsuit and a glass of cheap champagne.
"Abigail..." Carter sobbed, pressing his face into the carpet. "Abigail, please..."
