Chapter 10 - The Breakfast of Peace

One Year Later.

The morning sun cast golden, warm light through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of our new coastal home in Encinitas.

The ocean waves rolled gently against the sandy shore in the distance, filling the air with a soothing, rhythmic sound. The house smelled wonderful—freshly brewed coffee, warm cinnamon rolls, and sweet strawberries.

I stood by the kitchen counter, wearing a soft wool sweater, pouring a fresh cup of coffee.

Ten-year-old Vera was sitting at the kitchen island. She was wearing her school uniform, her bright hazel eyes clear, joyful, and glowing with health. She was laughing while reading a book of funny riddles, her bright, musical laughter bouncing off the wooden beams of the high ceiling.

I walked over and placed a plate in front of her.

On the plate was a toasted bagel spread with cream cheese, two perfectly fried eggs, and a small bowl of fresh, sliced organic strawberries—her absolute favorite.

Vera looked down at the plate.

For a tiny fraction of a second, my mind drifted back to that terrible morning two years ago in Carlsbad—the morning when a frightened, bruised little girl held a piece of toast and asked if she was allowed to eat it.

Vera looked up at me.

She picked up a strawberry, popped it into her mouth, and grinned, her eyes sparkling with pure, unadulterated happiness.

"Mom?" Vera asked playfully.

"Yes, my sweet girl?" I smiled, leaning against the counter.

"Can I have another cinnamon roll after I finish my eggs?"

A rich, warm laugh bubbled up from deep inside my heart—a laugh filled with pure peace, absolute victory, and endless love.

I leaned over, kissed her forehead softly, and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

"You can have whatever you want, Vera," I said softly, looking into the eyes of my beautiful daughter. "This is your home. And you belong here forever."

Vera picked up her fork, dug into her breakfast with joy, and continued reading her book.

I stood beside her, holding my warm coffee mug, watching the golden sunlight dance across the ocean horizon.

The nightmare was over. The battle was won. And in our home, love had finally taken its permanent seat at the table.
