Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Oyster Bay

At 8:45 PM, a heavy fog rolled in from Long Island Sound, blanketing the grand, gated estates of Oyster Bay in a dense white haze.

A beaten-up black sedan pulled slowly up the long, winding driveway of Victor Ryker’s French neoclassical mansion. The high iron gates closed automatically behind the vehicle with a heavy metallic thud.

Daniel Crawford stepped out of the car, clutching a sleek black leather briefcase against his chest.

His heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Every shadow seemed to move; every rustle of the surrounding oak trees sounded like approaching sirens. He adjusted his coat collar, trying to calm his breathing as two large, stone-faced security guards escorted him through the grand front entrance.

The interior of Ryker’s mansion was an extravagant display of ruthless wealth: marble floors, priceless European artwork, and crystal chandeliers casting harsh shadows across the high ceilings.

Victor Ryker sat behind an oversized mahogany desk in his private library, swirling a glass of amber cognac. He was a man in his late fifties with sharp, angular features, slicked-back gray hair, and eyes as cold as arctic ice.

"Mr. Crawford," Ryker said smoothly, gesturing to a chair opposite the desk. "You look... weathered."

"I don't have time for small talk, Ryker," Daniel panted, setting the briefcase on the desk and snapping the locks open. "The data is all here. Every single file for the Brooklyn Waterfront Development project. Master blueprints, land options, corporate bid limits, and internal financial models."

Ryker leaned forward, eyeing the flash drives inside the briefcase with calculating greed. "And you’re certain these files haven't been corrupted or encrypted by Emily’s legal team?"

"I downloaded them directly from the Harrison primary mainframe using my master executive key before they revoked my access," Daniel said, his eyes glittering with manic triumph. "It’s clean. It’s complete. With this, you can undercut their land bids by tomorrow morning and seize control of the entire East River district."

Ryker smiled, pulling a sleek tablet from his desk drawer. "Very impressive, Daniel. You may be a disgraced fugitive, but you’ve delivered a masterpiece of corporate betrayal."

Ryker tapped a few buttons on the tablet screen. "Initiating the Bitcoin transfer now. Five million dollars to your designated wallet."

Daniel watched the tablet screen as the progress bar began to fill: 10%... 30%... 60%...

A twisted, victorious laugh escaped Daniel’s lips. "She thought she destroyed me," he muttered under his breath, staring at the screen. "She thought she could throw me out like trash..."

CRASH!

The massive stained-glass windows overlooking the rear terrace exploded inward in a shower of brilliant, glittering shards!

Black-clad tactical officers burst through the shattered windows, their weapon-mounted flashlights cutting through the dust and smoke!

"FBI! DOWN ON THE GROUND! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!" violent, booming voices roared from every direction!

"What the hell?!" Ryker screamed, springing from his chair as his cognac glass shattered against the floor.

Before Ryker’s personal security guards could draw their weapons, red laser sights locked onto their chests. "DON'T MOVE! DROP THE WEAPONS! DROP THEM NOW!"

Daniel stood paralyzed with shock. The briefcase containing the drives was knocked off the desk, spilling its contents across the marble floor.

"NO! NO!" Daniel shrieked, dropping to his knees, frantically scrambling to grab the flash drives as tactical officers swarmed the room.

A heavy boot slammed down onto Daniel’s hand, pinning his fingers against the cold floor.

"Daniel Crawford, you are under arrest!" a federal agent barked, forcing Daniel’s arms behind his back and snapping cold, heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Get off me! You don't understand! I have five million dollars! I’m leaving!" Daniel screamed, thrashing wildly as he was hauled to his feet.

From the hallway, the heavy double doors opened wide.

Stepping through the smoke and broken glass came Special Agent In Charge Vance, flanked by Michael Harrington and Sarah Jenkins.

And behind them walked me.

I wore my long black wool coat, my posture erect, my eyes calm and unyielding as I looked at the two men standing in handcuffs.

Victor Ryker glared at Michael Harrington, his face dark with rage. "Harrington... you set me up!"

"You set yourself up, Victor," Michael replied coolly, stepping over a piece of broken glass. "Purchasing stolen corporate trade secrets from a wanted federal fugitive? That’s conspiracy to commit economic espionage. A federal felony."

"I didn't buy anything!" Ryker sneered. "The transaction was never completed!"

Sarah Jenkins held up an iPad, showing a live digital tracking log. "Actually, Mr. Ryker, the wire transfer hit the digital blockchain four seconds before the officers entered the room. The digital receipt bears your private corporate encryption signature. You’re done."

Ryker fell silent, his face turning ash-gray as federal agents handcuffed him and led him away.

Then, Special Agent Vance shoved Daniel forward, bringing him face-to-face with me.

Daniel was shaking uncontrollably. Tears of humiliation and rage mixed with the dirt and sweat on his face. He looked at me, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and completely broken.

"Emily..." he sobbed, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic whimpering sound. "Emily, please... tell them to stop... please... I’m your husband..."

I looked at him—at the man who had stolen from my father, cheated on me with his mistress, tried to steal my baby, and tried to destroy my family's legacy.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel hatred.

I felt nothing at all.

"You were my husband, Daniel," I said softly, my voice echoing in the ruined library. "Now, you're just a cautionary story about what happens when a thief forgets who built the house."

I turned my back on him for the final time.

May you like

"Take him away, Agent Vance," Michael said quietly.

As the federal agents dragged Daniel Crawford out into the Long Island night, his hysterical screams of protest were drowned out by the flashing red lights and roaring sirens of thirty police vehicles waiting in the driveway.
