Chapter 6 - The Stolen Hour

Noah’s eyes dilated with absolute, raw shock, but his training under Ellis’s oppressive thumb kicked in instantly. Not a single muscle in his face twitched. He didn't gasp; he didn't cry out. He simply nodded once—a tiny, almost imperceptible movement of his chin—and continued walking down the hallway toward the library with the rest of his class.
Miller, Ellis’s security chief, glanced back suspicious from the tablet screen. "Is there a problem, ma'am?"
"None at all," I said coolly, tucking the silver pen into my blazer pocket. "Dr. Sterling, I’ll need fifteen minutes to inspect the private library archives on the third floor. Please ensure the security team remains here to clear the server access logs."
"Certainly, Ms. Vance," Sterling bowed slightly.
I walked briskly toward the central staircase, my heels clicking against the marble floor. Maya fell into step beside me, her eyes darting to the overhead security cameras.
"We have seven minutes before Ellis leaves the trustee luncheon in the south pavilion," Maya murmured under her breath. "His motorcade is idling out front. If he sees you anywhere near the academic wing, this turns into an armed standoff."
"I’m not leaving without speaking to my son," I said, my voice cold as iron. "Is the jammer active?"
Maya checked her watch. "Activating now."
A faint hum vibrated through the air as Maya pressed a button on her belt. Instantly, every security camera in the East Wing froze, looping a three-second pre-recorded loop of empty hallways to the central monitoring station. The electronic door locks along the library corridor clicked open as their network connections failed.
I pushed through the heavy oak doors of the Vanguard library.
The room was vast, filled with tall stacks of leather-bound books, stained-glass windows, and empty study carrels.
At the far end of the room, sitting at a long mahogany table under a tall arched window, was Noah. He was alone.
The moment he heard the heavy doors close and lock behind me, he stood up. He didn't walk; he ran.
I dropped my bag, dropped my sunglasses, and met him halfway down the center aisle.
Noah slammed into my arms with such force it knocked the wind out of me. His small arms wrapped around my neck, holding on with a desperate, terrifying strength. His body shuddered with violent, silent sobs, his face buried deep into the crook of my neck.
"Mom... Mom..." he sobbed, his voice cracking, the cold adult composure he had worn for weeks shattering into a million pieces. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I had to say it. He was going to put you in jail. He had all those papers with your signature... he told me you'd be locked away forever..."
"Shh... baby, shh," I wept, kissing his hair, holding him against my chest as if I could shield him from the entire world. "I know. I know everything. I saw the files, Noah. I heard the recordings. You saved me. My brave, brilliant boy. You saved my life."
He pulled back slightly, his face wet with tears, grabbing my hands with fierce urgency. "You shouldn't be here, Mom! Ellis and Marcus Vance... they aren't just businessmen. They’re moving money for dangerous people. International criminals. That black card—it belongs to a private clearing house Vance uses to bribe foreign officials. If they know you have it—"
"I already unlocked it, Noah," I said, wiping his tears with my thumb. "I opened the Archimedes server. I have every audio file, every offshore transaction ledger, every email between Ellis and Vance."
Noah stared at me, his mouth slightly open, tears still glistening on his eyelashes. "You... you solved the cipher?"
"I'm your mother," I smiled through my tears, kissing his forehead. "Did you really think a few lines of code could keep me away from you?"
A sudden bang echoed from the hallway outside, followed by the muffled sound of heavy pounding against the locked library doors.
"Sabrina!" Ellis’s voice roared from the corridor, thick with fury and disbelief. "Open this damn door! I know you're in there!"
Noah’s face turned deathly pale. He stepped instinctively in front of me, trying to push me toward the rear fire exit. "Mom, run! Go through the service stairs!"
"I'm not running from him anymore, Noah," I said softly, picking up my dark sunglasses and putting them back on. I turned my head toward Maya, who was standing near the entrance with her hand rest calmly on her concealed holster. "Maya, unlock the door."
"Are you sure, ma'am?" Maya asked.
"Unlock it."
The heavy brass latch clicked open. The doors flew inward, slamming against the wood paneling.
Ellis Chappell stormed into the library, his face flushed red with rage, his tie slightly undone. Behind him stood Miller and four armed Vanguard private guards.
"You insane bitch," Ellis snarled, his eyes locking onto me with pure venom. "You forged corporate credentials? You breached a secure prep school? I’ll have you locked in a psychiatric facility for the rest of your life! Miller, grab her!"
Miller stepped forward, raising a pair of heavy restraints.
"Step back, Miller," I said.
My voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a cold, crystalline authority that halted the security chief in his tracks.
I took two slow steps toward my ex-husband, leaving Noah safely behind me. I reached into my coat, pulled out a sleek black tablet, and pressed play on the central speaker.
The library filled with the loud, crystal-clear sound of Marcus Vance’s voice:
“We use the family trust as the primary clearing house. Sabrina has no idea her name is listed as the sole managing director... She’ll take the federal indictment, and I’ll take the capital out through the Swiss accounts.”
Ellis froze as if he had been struck by lightning. Every drop of color drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly and grey.
"Where... where did you get that?" he stammered, his eyes darting frantically to Noah, then back to me.
"I have everything, Ellis," I said, stepping closer until I was standing inches from his chest. "The SEC. The Department of Justice. The Federal Bureau of Investigation. Copies of these files were uploaded to their secure servers twenty minutes ago. As we speak, federal agents are executing search warrants on your offices in Upper Arlington and Vance Global Headquarters in Chicago."
Ellis swallowed hard, his hands beginning to tremble. "Sabrina... wait. We can talk about this. We can settle this privately. I’ll give you full custody. I’ll give you the house. Millions... I’ll give you millions!"
"I don't need your money, Ellis," I said softly, pulling the plain black card from my pocket and letting it drop onto the floor at his feet. "Our son already gave me six million dollars. And he gave me something far more valuable."
I turned my back on him, extending my hand to Noah.
May you like
"Come on, sweetie," I said, my voice filled with warmth. "Let's go home."
Noah took my hand, gripping it tight, and together we walked out of the library, past the silent, frozen guards, and into the sunlight.
