Chapter 5 - Infiltrating the Lion’s Den

The grand ballroom of the Regent Hotel was a blinding display of crystal chandeliers, sparkling evening gowns, and expensive champagne. Outside, the autumn rain beat down on the city streets, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with the suffocating warmth of corporate triumph.

At the center stage, standing behind a mahogany podium emblazoned with the golden crest of Carter Industries, was Marcus Vance. He looked immaculate in a custom-tailored charcoal tuxedo, his silver hair neatly combed, smiling warmly as he addressed the elite crowd of five hundred guests.

"Tonight, as we celebrate another record-breaking year of philanthropic giving in honor of my late, dear brother-in-law, Thomas Carter..." Marcus's smooth, practiced voice echoed through the state-of-the-art sound system.

Sitting near the back of the service corridor behind the staging area, I checked the battery on the encrypted handheld transmitter Julian had built for me. I wore a stolen catering waiter's uniform—black trousers, white shirt, and a black bow tie—with a silver tray balanced casually on my hand.

Through the small service door, I could see Linda sitting in the front row next to a corrupt city councilman, wearing a glittering diamond necklace that had belonged to my mother. She looked completely untouchable.

My earpiece crackled to life with Julian's voice from the command van parked two blocks away.

“Leo, I’m routing into the hotel’s internal fiber-optic network right now. Give me three minutes to bypass their firewall redundancy before I upload the archive to the main projector feed.”

"Copy that," I whispered into the collar mic. "Make sure the audio files of Linda and the judge play first. I want the whole room to hear her voice before Marcus even realizes what's happening."

Suddenly, a heavy hand gripped my shoulder from behind.

"Hey! You're not on the catering roster for tonight. What are you doing back here?"

I spun around. It was the hotel's head of security—a massive man with a buzzcut and a snarling expression, reaching for his radio.

Without missing a beat, I smashed the edge of the metal serving tray directly into his chin. The man stumbled backward with a muffled grunt, crashing into a stack of empty glassware crates.

Before he could recover, I lunged forward, grabbing his radio to prevent him from calling for backup, and swept his legs out from under him. He hit the concrete floor hard, knocked completely unconscious.

I stripped his security earpiece and radio, clipping them onto my belt, and sprinted toward the main stage control booth hidden behind the heavy velvet curtains.

“Leo! We are go!” Julian’s voice shouted through my earpiece. “Uploading payload now! Three... two... one... execute!”

On stage, Marcus Vance was just reaching the climax of his speech.

"...and as we look forward to the future of Carter Industries, we remember that legacy is built on integrity, family, and—"

Suddenly, the massive multi-million-dollar LED screens behind Marcus flickered, going pitch black for a fraction of a second. Then, the screen burst into bright, high-definition color, displaying a legal document stamped with federal bank seals: TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS: OFFSHORE EMBEZZLEMENT TRAIL.

The murmurs in the crowd instantly died down, replaced by a stunned, suffocating silence.

And then, audio began to play through the ballroom's pristine speakers—crystal clear, booming across the entire room:

(Linda’s Voice): "If the boy gets out of prison in three years, he'll start asking questions about Thomas's estate. We need to make sure the probate judge signs off on the incompetence declaration before he reaches the gates."

(Corrupt Judge’s Voice): "Done. Thomas Carter is legally dead on paper as of last Tuesday. His signature won't be worth the paper it's printed on."

In the front row, Linda went completely rigid, her champagne glass slipping from her fingers and shattering against the marble floor.

On stage, Marcus froze mid-sentence, his face draining of all color as he stared up at the giant screens displaying his own signed wire transfer receipts to the Cayman Islands.

The entire ballroom erupted into chaos.
