Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Dock

By the spring of 2027, Ellis had completely transformed. He was a bright, laughing six-year-old who loved to run down the wooden dock behind the Severn River house, his old dog Barnaby trotting faithfully beside him.

One Saturday evening, as the light turned that familiar, soft silver-blue, Blythe stood on the back porch, watching Marcus help Ellis cast a small plastic fishing line into the water. Marcus had become a permanent fixture in their lives, his quiet, steady loyalty providing the protective framework that allowed Blythe to focus on being a mother.

"Look, Mama!" Ellis shouted, his voice ringing out across the water, clear and full of joy. "I caught a leaf! A big one!"

Blythe laughed, walking down the wooden steps to the dock, her heart full to the brim. "That’s a beautiful leaf, sweetheart. We should frame it."

Marcus stood up, his hand resting gently on Ellis’s shoulder as the boy ran off to show the leaf to Barnaby. "He’s growing fast, Blythe. The school placement specialist said his cognitive development scores are already above average for his age group."

"He’s a Sutter, Marcus," Blythe said softly, looking out at the river. "We survive."

Marcus turned to face her, his dark eyes warm and steady in the evening light. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple platinum ring—no diamonds, no performance, just a solid circle of pure metal.

"I know you've been through a war, Blythe," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a low, sincere register. "And I know you don't need a man to protect your house or your company anymore. But if you'll have me... I’d like to be the man who stays by the gate. For the rest of our lives."

Blythe looked at the ring, then up at the honest, unshakeable face of the man who had stood by her side through the darkest hours of her return. She reached out, her fingers locking securely around his hand.
