Chapter 7 - The True Family

The winter holidays in 2026 were the quietest I had ever experienced—and the most beautiful. For the first time in my adult life, there was no chaotic family dinner where I was expected to pay the bill while listening to Vanessa complain about her lifestyle or my father criticize my career choices.

Instead, my small house was filled with the warmth of real friendship. Marcus, his daughter Chloe, and a few close friends from my office gathered in my living room on Christmas Eve. The smell of fresh pine, hot apple cider, and roasted garlic filled the air.

Abigail sat near the Christmas tree, unwrapping a large box from Marcus. When the paper fell away, she let out a shriek of joy. It was a professional-grade telescope.

"So you can look at the stars from the backyard, Abbie," Marcus smiled, kneeling down to help her set up the tripod. "No matter how dark it gets down here, the stars are always exactly where they’re supposed to be."

"Thank you, Uncle Marcus!" she cried, throwing her arms around his neck.

I stood by the kitchen counter, watching them, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over my shoulders. Lisa, my senior nurse colleague who lived down the street, walked over and clinked her glass against mine.

"You look different, Catherine," Lisa said, her eyes warm. "The tension in your jaw... it’s completely gone."

"I feel like I’ve been carrying a boulder up a mountain for thirty years, Lisa," I said, looking at Abigail’s radiant, happy face. "And I finally just dropped it."

"The right people stay, Catherine. The people who love you don't require you to buy your way into their hearts."

Later that night, after everyone had left and Abigail was fast asleep under her new flannel blankets, Marcus stayed behind to help me clear the kitchen. We worked in a comfortable, easy silence, the clinking of glasses and plates providing a gentle rhythm to the evening.

"The trial date is set for February fourteenth, Catherine," Marcus said quietly, setting down a dish towel. "The prosecutor isn't offering any more deals. Theresa and Robert are looking at a mandatory minimum of three years in state prison. Julian’s plea deal is finalized—he received five years of supervised probation and lost his banking license permanently. He’s currently working as a dispatcher for a local towing company."

I nodded slowly. "And Vanessa?"

"She filed for divorce last week, Catherine. She’s trying to distance herself from the entire family to save her own assets. The Miller empire didn't just crack—it completely disintegrated from the inside out."

I leaned back against the counter, looking out at the dark backyard where the snow was beginning to fall softly over the grass. "They built their entire lives on the idea that other people were disposable, Marcus. They finally found out that the world doesn't work that way."
