Chapter 8 - The Transformation

Three months passed.

The world outside Holloway Systems changed slowly, shifting from the harsh chill of winter to the early bloom of spring.

Under Claire’s management as trustee, Holloway Systems underwent a massive cultural shift. She eliminated the toxic, hyper-competitive atmosphere Grant had cultivated, replacing key executives with ethical leaders, instituting generous family leave policies, and redirecting twenty percent of corporate profits toward medical technology research—specifically fertility science and maternal care.

Wall Street responded with unprecedented enthusiasm. The stock price reached an all-time high of ninety-two dollars a share, making the company worth over one hundred million dollars.

Meanwhile, Grant Holloway lived a very different life.

Stripped of his CEO title and reduced to a minority board member with no operational control, Grant moved out of his luxury penthouse and rented a modest townhouse three miles from Claire’s home.

He didn't fight the court orders. He didn't appeal the trust transfer. He spent his days attending court-mandated parental education classes, working with a therapist to address his deep-seated narcissism and control issues, and visiting the hospital every single day during the twins' three-month stay in the NICU.

He never forced his way into Claire’s space. When she was in the room with the babies, Grant waited outside in the hallway. When she left, he would step inside, sit beside the incubators, and hold Maya and Nora’s tiny hands, reading to them for hours from children’s books he had bought at a local store.

On a warm Tuesday in late April, Maya and Nora were finally cleared to leave the hospital.

Claire sat in the private discharge room, wrapping Maya in a pink woolen blanket while Sarah adjusted Nora’s car seat.

The door opened softly. Grant stood in the doorway, wearing a simple sweater and jeans—looking younger, thinner, and entirely stripped of the arrogant armor he had worn for decades.

"Claire," he said gently, standing at a respectful distance. "I... I brought the car seats you requested. I checked the safety ratings. They're installed in the back of your SUV."

Claire looked up at him.

She saw the dark circles under his eyes, the absence of the gold watch he used to flaunt, and the quiet, humble posture he had maintained for months. He had changed—not because a court had forced him to, but because losing everything had finally allowed him to see what actually mattered.

"Thank you, Grant," Claire said softly.

Grant looked at the two baby girls resting in their carriers. His eyes welled with tears, but he quickly wiped them away with the back of his hand.

"I know I don't have a right to ask for anything," Grant said, his voice raw. "I know I ruined our marriage, and I know I don't deserve to be a father to those girls. But... if you ever allow it, I would like to be in their lives. Not as an owner, not as a boss. Just... as someone who loves them."

Claire set Maya’s carrier down beside Nora’s. She walked slowly across the room until she was standing two feet from her ex-husband.

"Grant," she said, her voice steady and clear. "You lost your right to be my husband the day you put flowers for Evelyn in my kitchen. But you didn't lose your duty to be their father. If you show up for them—really show up, without games, without ego, and without lies—I will never keep you from them."

Grant closed his eyes, a single sob escaping his throat as he nodded. "I will show up, Claire. Every single day."
