Chapter 8 - The Verdict

Judge Hastings slammed her gavel down onto the wooden block.

"The court finds that Darlene Lane has engaged in severe, systemic child neglect, financial fraud, and intentional endangerment," Judge Hastings declared, her voice resounding with absolute authority. "Her parental rights regarding Sadi and Maisie Lane are hereby permanently terminated."

Darlene gasped, bursting into loud, angry tears as her attorney tried in vain to quiet her down.

Judge Hastings turned her attention to Grant and Sadi.

"Furthermore," the Judge continued, her expression breaking into a rare, warm smile, "after reviewing the comprehensive social services reports, psychological evaluations, and hearing the testimony presented today, this court finds that Mr. Grant Vale has provided an exemplary, loving, and safe environment for these children. The petition for permanent adoption is hereby... GRANTED."

The gavel struck again.

Sadi blinked. "Adoption?"

Grant stood up from the table, his eyes shining with tears. He walked over to the witness stand, reaching out his arms.

Sadi threw herself off the wooden chair and leaped into Grant’s arms. Grant caught her, spinning her around as he held her tight, burying his face in her shoulder, sobbing quietly with pure, unadulterated relief.

"You’re my daughter now, Sadi," Grant whispered into her hair. "Nobody can ever take you away. You and Maisie are Vales."

Across the courtroom, Arthur Pendelton gave a satisfied nod, while the police stepped forward to take Darlene into custody to begin serving her five-year prison sentence for criminal child endangerment.

As they walked out of the courthouse, a wall of news reporters and photographers swarmed the marble steps, flashes blinding the afternoon sun.

Grant didn't hide behind his bodyguards. He walked down the steps holding Sadi’s hand in his right hand, while cradling Maisie—who was now walking and babbling—in his left arm.

A reporter shouted from the crowd: "Mr. Vale! Why did you adopt two girls from a neglected background?!"

Grant stopped on the courthouse steps. He looked down at Sadi, then looked at the cameras.

"I didn't adopt them out of charity," Grant said clearly into the microphones. "Sadi Lane saved her sister with a broken wooden sled and pure courage. She proved to me what real love looks like. I didn't save these girls... they saved me."
