Chapter 6 - The Trauma Ward

The sterile smell of antiseptic replaced the metallic tang of blood.

For three days, the world was a blur of fluorescent lights, soft-spoken nurses, X-rays, and the steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor beside my bed at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

My physical toll was extensive: four fractured ribs, thirty-seven stitches across my face, hands, and shoulder, a severe concussion, and a sprained ankle. But the deepest wounds weren't visible on the medical scans.

Marcus barely left my side. He sat in the vinyl armchair in the corner of my private room, his tactical gear replaced by civilian clothes, working off his laptop while monitoring the federal guards posted outside my door.

On the fourth morning, the door opened softly, and Marcus’s senior investigative partner, Agent Rachel Chen, walked in carrying a thick legal folder.

"How are we feeling today, Sarah?" Rachel asked gently, setting a cup of green tea on my bedside table.

"Better," I said, my voice still raspy beneath the plastic oxygen cannula. "Is... is it real? Are they actually in custody?"

Rachel smiled—a cold, satisfying expression.

"Arthur Vance was denied bail this morning by a federal judge," Rachel reported, opening the folder. "He’s being held at the federal detention center on forty-two counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, tax evasion, and RICO conspiracy. The evidence we recovered from his office safe—thanks to your tip—proved they were laundering money for international cartels."

"And Vance?" I asked, my heart tightening despite myself.

"Vance is in a separate holding cell," Rachel said firmly. "He’s facing state charges for felony aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and domestic violence, alongside his federal indictment for financial conspiracy. His defense attorneys tried to argue that you were 'emotionally unstable' and fabricated the assault."

"Of course they did," I whispered, looking down at my bandaged hands.

"Except," Marcus interjected from his chair, closing his laptop, "the live audio feed from your emergency fob caught everything. Vance shouting at you, Beatrice telling him to drag your body into the closet, and Arthur offering him whiskey while you were bleeding on the floor. It’s all on a secure federal recording. Their defense team collapsed the moment the prosecutor played the first two minutes in court."

A heavy, profound silence settled over the room.

For six years, I had been trapped in a world where my reality was constantly twisted against me. Where every abuse was turned into my fault, every bruise blamed on my clumsiness, every cry for help dismissed as emotional instability.

Now, the cold, unyielding power of the law had validated my truth.

"What about Beatrice?" I asked softly.

"Beatrice Vance was indicted as an accessory after the fact and for corporate money laundering," Rachel replied. "She spent seventy-two hours in a county lockup before her legal team managed to post a two-million-dollar bond. But all their bank accounts are frozen under federal forfeiture laws. They don't have access to a single penny of their wealth."

Rachel reached into her folder and pulled out a single sheet of paper.

"This is a petition for emergency asset preservation and spousal protection," Rachel said. "Because the court ruled that Vance used marital assets to fund his illegal operations while concealing income from you, you are entitled to full victim restitution under federal law."

I looked at the document.

"I don't want his money," I said quietly.

Marcus walked over to my bed, sitting on the edge of the mattress, taking my bandaged hand in his.

"It’s not his money, Sarah," Marcus said gently. "It’s your future. It’s what he stole from you for six years. And you’re taking it back."
