Chapter 10 - Where the Air Is Clear

That evening, as twilight painted the sky in shades of deep lavender, rose, and gold, Anna and Ruby walked up to the highest stone ridge overlooking the valley.
The cool mountain breeze carried the clean, crisp scent of blooming pine and damp earth.
They sat together on a wide, smooth granite rock that looked out over miles of uninterrupted green forest stretching all the way to the horizon.
Ruby leaned her head against Anna’s side, her small hand wrapped securely inside her mother's fingers.
"Mommy?" Ruby asked, looking up at the first evening stars appearing in the sky.
"Yes, my love?" Anna asked softly, wrapping her wool shawl around both of them.
"Are we ever going back to the old house?" Ruby asked quietly.
Anna looked out over the valley—over the land her father had preserved, over the clinic that now saved hundreds of children, and over the home where her daughter slept in safety every single night.
"No, sweetheart," Anna answered, her voice clear, strong, and filled with unbroken peace. "We don't need to go back. We built a better place right here."

Ruby smiled, closed her eyes, and let out a long, slow, contented breath that blended seamlessly into the quiet whisper of the wind through the trees.
Anna held her daughter tight against her heart, looking up at the endless night sky, knowing that no matter how hot the summer became, no matter what storms swept across the world below, the air up here would always be cool, pure, and completely clear.
